When do I start the day?
« on: June 23, 2009, 15:03:38 pm »
Hi there -- my 10 week old son had been waking up to eat between 3-4:30am until last night.  Last night he ate around 5am - YEAH! :)  The problem is that we had been doing wake up at 7am so when I go back to work that is our 'wake up - start the day time'.  So I didn't know what to do today because 7am is only 2 hours after he just ate the entire bottle.  I tried to feed him at 7am and he was not interested for the entire hour (7-8am) just ate 2 ounces (normally eats 3-4) and it was a struggle.

So my question is .. do I start his day once it is 5am or later? OR should I have tried the pacifier to see if he would have lasted until 6 or later?  He is almost 11lbs but is only 10 weeks old so I wasn't sure if I could do that or not.

Thanks much! :)

Hi

I always tried to treat any wakings before 7am as a night waking so it would be quick feed with low light etc then back to bed, even if it was 6am.  I would then get her up at 7 as normal and offer her milk (she very rarely took much but it was enough to see her until next feed).  If she woke at 6.30 though, I would start the day then as by the time they are fed etc, its time to get up anyway  :P but 6.30 was my limit!!

I actually used the pacifier at the same age to get DD to last a bit longer.  I was never sure is she was genuinely hungry or not so I thought, if she falls asleep with the paci then she cant be that hungry  :P.  But I am not sure what others think??

Thanks for the messages.  I've read others like this just do a regular feed and then top them off at 7am.  Here's the problem -- my little guy almost refuses to eat again at 7am.  Today he chugged down 3/4 of an oz and then it was a struggle to get anymore down.  We worked at it for an hour and he did do another oz or so.  But normally if he wakes up early than 5am (today it was 5:15am) he would have 4oz and then do 3 or more oz's at 7am so I feel he's not getting enough.

I also saw somewhere (not sure where) that they limit the night waking so they'll eat at 7am but that scares me because if he doesn't then he will not get hardly anything.  Any more advice out there?

Thanks in advance! :)

Hi

I started feeding 1oz less for a few nights, then put back to bed.  SHe usually went back to sleep easily enough.  I then dropped the night feed by 2 oz then tried to settle.  She actually stopped the night feeds just after that at about 12 weeks  ;).  So yeah, I would try limiting the amount he eats if he wakes close to wake up time so he eats his full morning milk feed.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think I can limit it as it is one of his biggest of the day.

Yesterday -- he only ate 21 oz the whole day. I took him into the peds office today and he is weighing in at the 5th percentile and a month ago he was at the 20th.  They just said, "He isn't failure to thrive yet so what would you like us to do?"

Something else is wrong.  Hopefully we can get some help from the feeding clinic this week.

Awww I hope your LO eats better soon  :'(.  I would defo not limit his milk just now then if he is not gaining weight as well as he usually does.  The only other suggestion I have is offer his normal 7am bottle, then offer him another after 1 hour rather than keeping at it for the full hour.  So see what he takes at the start, then give him a good break from drinking, then offer him more.  My LO does not eat well in the morning and we went through a phase of having to offer another small bottle an hour after her 1st feed otherwise she would only take 2/3oz.  It usually worked quite well and she would quite often take a good amount from the 2nd amount.

I hope he starts eating better soon.

xx

Just jumping in to ask, does your LO have reflux?  Have you checked out the boards on symptoms, maybe silent reflux?  I know a lot of lo's drink more at night due to being more relaxed and it's more painful during the day.  Have a look around this site and see what you think.

Yup -- he has reflux and has been medicated since 3 weeks old.  I think it is pretty well under control since he is sleeping great and hardly has any episodes (shooting up his throat into his mouth/nose) anymore -- just wet burps.

We think he may have feeding issues so we go to a feeding clinic on Friday -- wish us luck and thanks for the advice!
