new type of pain... thrush?
« on: June 24, 2009, 19:23:10 pm »
I've noticed a 'new' pain while I'm nursing dd (she's 7 weeks).  I'm quite familiar with the let-down pain/sensation, and this is different - it is only in my left breast and seems to be worse during letdown, but I also get a twinge when she takes a big swig.  and actually, I just got it and she's not even nursing...

There is no obviouse know or anything - I've had mastitis before, but it was a while ago - I'm feeling okay though.  Have been through an extremely stressful couple of weeks and havn't been caring fo myself as much as I should though...

It's a really deep pain - to the right of the nipple.

Any ideas?  I hope it's not mastitis - I can't afford to get sick at the moment....

It could be a blocked duct? Would explain the pain while you're not nursing but obviously thinking about your LO. Try a warm cloth on the area and try massaging it and hand expressing to work it out. If its still painful I'd see your health visitor.

I was wondering about a blocked duct, too.

If you don't think it's mastitis, the only other thing that jumps to mind is thrush...

I dont have much experience with bf as did it for a small amount of time, but thrush is what my thoughts are, at first i didnt have any sign except this deep pain in the breast, but then noticed lo had it inside mouth and also a little later I developed like a yeasty coating on my nipple, but the first sign was that deep pain.

hmm - I'm wondering if this could be thrush - I've never had it before, but it may make sense since my diet has been terrible and consisted of tons of sugary foods and way more grains than I normally eat.  Dds mouth does not have any white patches, but I did notice a little diaper rash today that was really unusual for her - it's got that pimply look to it, too, which I think can be caused by thrush.  I don't really have any nipple pain or anything, though - no redness, etc.  Just the deep pain that I described.  Plus, I think I noticed the same pain happen tonight in the other breast...

The other thing that is weird - I just googled this to see if it is at all connected with thrush - I've noticed the past 2 days or so, that I will occassionally have weird sensations on my skin - like it's 'crawling' - but this has been happening on my back/arms - not places I would associate with having thrush.  But it's really weird - I get totally convinced that there is a bug or a hair or something on my skin, and it turns out that it's not.  Anybody ever have thrush and 'crawling skin'?

I started my probiotics back up - do you think there's anything else I should do right now?

(((hugs)))

Just wanted to say that DD2 gets yeast infection diaper rashes every now and then.  My ped will call in a prescription for Nystatin that works very quickly.  In the meantime you can you get some Lotrimin, or even so Monastat and put it on her to stop the itchy/burning.

I can relate to the pain of thrush. If I had to describe it, it feels like a sharp needle prick right through your breast that just lingers there for a while.

The 1st time we got it, I had the pain, but didn't know what was causing it, so carried on bf regardless. While bf the next day, I then noticed a white spot on dd's lower inner lip. I got Dektarin oral gel at the pharmacy to apply to dd's mouth, as well as Mycostatin oral suspension drops (cleans out the entire system and prevents it from going to the bum and genitals) and Mycostatin cream to apply to my nipples.

I noticed that I only got it when I wore breast pads that made the nipple area warm and moist (ideal breeding area for thrush). Since I stopped wearing breast pads, we haven't had thrush again.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the input!

I up'd my dose of probiotics and really cut down on my consumption of sugars and grains the day I posted, and the pain stopped within 24 hours!  DD has no rash now either, so if it was thrush, I think we caught it really early before it got bad. ;D yay!
