Any ideas for a 3 hr road trip for a 9 1/2 month old
« on: June 26, 2009, 20:43:19 pm »
Hi there,

Wondering if there are any suggestions for a 3 hr car trip for my lo and me. Emma is 9 1/2 months old and lately does not seem to sleep that much in the car even at nap time. She is very alert and likes to look around.

I am just trying to think of new things I can do if she gets upset or to help keep her happy. So far, I am going to bring her nursery rhyme CD so we can sing. We have a monkey mirror she likes to play with and a few toys, her lovey. We will stop at least once to eat all going well but other then that does any one have any suggestions?

Thanks so much,
Les

I do a 2.5 hour drive to my parents house, and have been doing so for many months... when I am going to be going, I skip a morning nap and leave around lunch so she'll sleep most of the way (we do radio static in lieu of white noise).

If she won't sleep, I'd bring some baby mum-mums, a sippy cup of water, some cheerios in a cup, a new fun toy she's never played with, and hope for the best.

I like what pp said. Maybe leave a little after a normal naptime and bring some comfort items that are associated with sleep like a pacifier or lovey. If you play music or anything, maybe even try playing it in the car. If you could get your long 2 hour nap during that time you'd get through most of the trip. I try to plan all our long drives at naptime and DD will settle after about 15-20 mnutes and fall asleep.

If you can sit in back with her, it will also help. Often DH and I take turns on long drives to visit family and sit in the back with DD in case she needs a snack break or a drink break or an entertainment break. If you can't sit in back and she does take a pacifier, clip it on with one of those clip things. I have made many a car ride reaching over the seat trying to blindly find them to give back to DD as well as trying to locate her mouth with little snacks. Not easy!

If you can put those shades on the side mirrors that block sun for babies (only really  helps for forward facing to actually block sun) BUT it might help to block out a lot of visual stimuli that cause her to stay alert and awake and help her lull to sleep a bit easier.

Hi Girls,

Thank you for your input. I am going to take the snacks, music, lovey etc...I think we will leave just before her First nap and hope for the best...I may just have to stop a couple of times if needed....maybe it will be a great smooth ride!

Thanks so much,
Les

If we have a long drive and we can manage it, we leave after bath so that she is properly ready for sleep.  The last couple of times we were able to bring the carseat in with her asleep and then resettled her when she woke.

Luckily, you only have a 3+ hour drive.  I say luckily because where I am, the drive from my house to the city where our family is located is over 6 hours even though it is still in the same state.  Yikes!  We've done it a couple of times.  Like PP's say, leaving around or just after naptime works, plus a lot of stops.  It does help for one of us to sit back there with her.  Last, but not least, both our cars have a DVD player in them, and that has been a big plus (but would not have worked at 9.5 months).  I would be worried to do the drive at night, because one time we flew with DD at 9 months on a night flight and she slept for about 4 hours, so when we arrived at our destination at midnight, she was wide awake and thought it was morning.  But, if your LO is easy to transition from one place to another while asleep, you might do OK.  My biggest bit of advice would be to not focus on the clock.  Expect trips with little ones involved to take longer than average, and most importantly, make sure DH or DP gets this as well.
