Brushing teeth! Argh!
« on: July 01, 2009, 14:52:36 pm »
I'm so over trying to brush this toddler's teeth! I've tried every trick I can think of: brushing my teeth at the same time; using one of those baby finger brushes which are extra soft; making it a game (brushing his nose, then his elbow, then his knee, then his lips, can I brush his teeth? NO!); having him brush my teeth while I brush his; singing a special teeth-brushing song; going nuts with the praise if he lets me get the brush in his mouth...

all that happens is that he sucks the toothpaste of the brush, then holds it out to me and says 'more please?'. No brushing at all. The only way I could actually brush his teeth is to physically hold him down and use his crying as the way to get at the teeth, but I don't want to make the situation worse!?!????

Anyone had any success with this? What do I do???

we had the same situation anna...and we created a story about teeth ants that need to be removed by brushing and if we do not remove them we get oowee in the teeth. So truth but not the whole truth and it worked wonders..that being said he only lets us brush his teeth properly after he was 2 or so. we also let him first brush as mcuh as he wants and then do a proper scrub. And DS also loves and sucks the toothpaste.
9 and 6, oh boy!

Would you consider a child electric t/brush...not sure if he'd let you, but just another approach I guess

Well  unless you force him, then I dont think there is that much you can do really, maybe try to get him at least to move the brush around his mouth? Ds started off badly only eating toothpaste, then went through a stage where he let me brush them when he finished cos this is what dd does. Now we are back in the phase of where he wont let me do anything.

Ha.  We have the same problem.  After months of varied success, 20 MO DD currently (and I stress currently) loves to brush her teeth, especially if she can use my toothbrush and paste (I give her an old electric of mine not turned on and just a tiny bit of toothpaste).  At night, she will let me use her own brush and paste, but as OP said, mostly, she just sucks on it.  At least it is an improvement on where we were a few months ago.

And, today is the 2nd trip to the dentist, so we will see how we've been doing.

Oh, on a related note, has anyone had success cutting their toddler's toenails???  She will let me do fingernails (although it takes an on and off approach), but not toes.  Of course, everyone says wait until she is asleep, but that will only work for the first toe, I would imagine, before she wakes up and still has more toes to go (and is now up and %&$)) off)

Oh cant help with the toe nail bit. DDs toe nails never seemed to be needed to be cut until she was about 4! Ds loves getting anything done to him, ears cleaned, toe nails or finger nails cut, used to let his nanny clean his nose with a cotton bud, loves his bath, loves having cream or powder rubbed in, and even when he had an eye infection he loved getting drops in his eyes even though they stung......

The musical toothbrush is what worked best for my dd.  she would always fight and rarely got her teeth brushed.  I brushed my teeth with a musical toothbrush,(to get her interested) and she was very interested.  I told her she could only use it if i could brush her teeth first and it worked.  I ended up getting a second so she could push the button and turn the music on and off while i brushed her teeth.
There was a thread a while back, I think Ruliani(i think...) posted about the Angel toothbrush.  You can use it with or without toothpaste, it is for infants and toddlers. they chew on it and it brushes their teeth.  Dont know how well it cleans but it is better than nothing.  I never tried it.  Google it to see if it is somithing for you.

I never had a toe clipping issue.  But...my kids loved when i did "This little piggy"  You could try it.  This little piggy went to the market, this little piggy went home this little piggy had Roast beef, this little piggy had none, and this little piggy went weee weee weee(and tickle a little) all the way home.  You could try clipping the nails inbetween each piggy???????  You could try it on someone else and have them really enjoy it, especially the tickling part.  some kids dont like tickling, my kids love it if yours lo likes it it may work.

Anna,  I found that it helped if he watched me brush my teeth. I did that a few times, and he was shocked at first... "wow, mum brushes her teeth too!"   Then he really wanted to get stuck in do it like Mum does.  After a few times he got curious and wanted to take over from my brushing so I let him "have a turn" of my tooth brush. It got better from there.

Can you get him to watch a big cousin or someone that he thinks is great like a grandparent brush their teeth and show that we all do it?  Can you get him to brush the teeth of his teddy and take turns with the teddy, show how teddy brushes around and around from side to side?  Maybe do a few pretend dames during the day with teddy (without pressure for LO to brush) and clap when teddy brushes properly.
