How MSPI babies must feel
« on: July 03, 2009, 14:02:19 pm »
I've just gained an insight into how MSPI babies must feel after being exposed to milk...

I've just reintroduced cow's milk into my diet after being off it for 10 months due to my son's MSPI - well  i think *I* am milk intolerant! Within 15 minutes of drinking the milk I got stomach pains that HURT. About an hour later I got gassy. Luckily I didn't drink the milk too close to bedtime or I would be tossing and turning and not being able to sleep!

3 hours later my stomach is still cramping occasionally, but not as bad as before. Funny thing is I did a milk challenge back in November after being off milk for 2 months - didn't have this reaction before. Seems like the longer I've been off it the worse the reaction is?

I tried sheep's milk yoghurt last night and didn't have this reaction, and I didn't notice anything with DS either.

There's lots of family stories about how I used to cry for hours and hours as a baby until I was 2. No one knew why - now I think I know why!

Sorry to hear you are going through this Lan!

Funny thing is I did a milk challenge back in November after being off milk for 2 months - didn't have this reaction before. Seems like the longer I've been off it the worse the reaction is?

Seems logical to me as the way I understand it, it can take a LONG time for your digestive system to "heal" from the damage that the milk has caused. If your bowel was only partly "healed" after 2 months, perhaps it wasn't reacting as badly. But, maybe now it has healed completely and is sort of screaming out "NO not this again!!"

I don't know any of this at all, I am only making some assumptions on what I do know about the digestive system and could be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off!

But again, sorry you are going through this.  Hugs, hoping you feel better soon.

Wow, very interesting.  I am having a similar experience.  2 months ago I had food poisoning from bad apple juice at McDonald's.  Well, ever since then every time I eat anything with Red Dye #40 I get extremely nauseas with bad heartburn.  Depends on how much I intake, but I had cheesies one night, and I love these things, and 5 hours later I woke up and puked all morning.  Then the next week I had licorice and I felt so sick with bad sharp gas pains in my stomach.  All food I use to eat beforehand without problems.  I can't imagine being in so much discomfort all the time.  I've read that in adults food intolerances can be triggered by an illness or gastrointestinal infection, ie Food Poisoning.

Wow guys.  Horrible that you are going through this, but interesting about how you are feeling.

We had another rough night with our LO last night and my DH said he thinks a lot of Dyllan's night wakings are gas pain not reflux at the moment (I'm so tired I have no idea anymore)...so I'm thinking that sticking to the MSPI diet may really help our LO, hopefully we will start seeing some improvement soon...

I do know that after you have had a tummy bug or something, you have to re-introduce foods pretty slowly 'cause your system is just unable to cope...perhaps in time you will be able to have some milk products (and some of the food dyes Melanie)....but if not, imagine how well you will feel now that you have worked out your intolerance??!!!

Hugs
xx

Lizzie you are so right.  It's nice to understand our own bodies more, that's for sure!

I hope eliminating the dairy for you will help your LO, gas pains are terrible!

Oh I so hope so too, we are feeling a bit lost at the moment, not knowing what to do for him.  He has been sick and teething but we are up very frequently with him at the moment and we are all exhausted and asking ourselves whether we have got it right this time or whether we are completely off the mark with MSPI, wish I knew....can only try though, right :)
Hope your body gets "back to normal" soon sweetie, food poisoning is just horrible!!

Just thought I'd give a quick update - I woke last night at 4 am still with stomach cramping - guess dairy can cause nightwakings! Now almost 24 hours later I am still getting the occasional cramp, but much better. Thanks you for all your thoughts - I just thought I'd share so that it might give us some idea of how babies must feel, since they can't tell us.

I spoke to a friend of mine whose LO grew out of MSPI at 3 years - the dietician said they had to keep exposing her to dairy regularly or she might become intolerant again. I wonder if that's what happened to me after being off it for so long? Though we all had gastro a week ago -  I'd forgotten until you'd mentioned it Melanie - so maybe it was just bad timing?

Red food dye really affects my son, he goes hyper after having it. And since our whole family has been eating more healthily, whenever we have any artificial flavours or colours or anything with MSG, we feel really sick. Maybe you have to build up a tolerance to these things too -  that's if you'd want to!

Yeah it does make you wonder about all the crap that we eat without even thinking about it.  It's no wonder sometimes we don't feel well :(

I'm really glad your tummy is starting to settle down sweetie, useful to know that once they are "over" their intolerance you have to keep exposing them to the product!!

Big hugs sweetie

I think I read somewhere that after you've been off dairy for a long time our systems become somewhat lactose intolerant (not protein intolerant), so you have to reintroduce it slowly and start with yogurt.  I've had not a drop of dairy for almost 8 months and I'm a bit nervous about starting it up again.

Lan, I hear ya.  When I started losing weight a while ago I was eating SUPER healthy.  Then Christmas came and I ate tons of bacon, and pancakes.  Well sure enough I got so sick during the opening of presents I had to go lay down.  I think I want to avoid all that stuff anyway, makes you wonder huh?

It's a good aversion therapy really! Even something like bacon can have artificial colours, flavours, MSG, soy protein  and preservatives!

Lizzie not all bacon does, just got to check labels or ask! I had no idea either until I read the label. It's so frustrating - why must manufacturers have to add this stuff? It's like real food just doesn't cut it anymore.

I have chopped herbs in a tube in my fridge and couldn't get fresh ones from the supermarket the other day....guess what, they have MILK in containers of chopped BASIL...as if basil is not flavoursome enough itself, seriously what is wrong with all these companies????  I was astounded, I really was
