Bumbo?
« on: July 06, 2009, 08:53:22 am »
Hi everyone,

Just wondered what age i can use a Bumbo seat from? Our LO is 4 months old and can hold his head up fine when i sit him on my knee or carry him upright against my shoulder. Do they need to be able to sit up unaided befire he can have a Bumbo?

Thanks

They are fine in them once they can hold their heads up as the shape of the seat helps to support them. My DS had one from 2 months as he was holding his head up quite well by then (and little sis is going the same way!) so we put him in for very short periods at first and built it up as he got stronger. Your LO should be fine in it! We love them, but I know a lot of people hate them.

Take care if you put it on a raised surface as they can push themselves backwards and out when they get bigger and stronger - we always kept ours on the floor.

Agreed with previous poster.. should be fine as long as the neck is strong enough.

I bought a bumbo for William... and discovered at 4 months he was far too big for it... have a photo somewhere will have to try and find it lol.. he looked ridiculous lol...

I started putting my LO in the bumbo at 4 months but b/c he had such a strong neck, I probably could of done it sooner. I think as long as your LO can hold his neck up, then the bumbo is great. However, a word of caution, my son was leaning over for a toy and fell out! Anyone else had that happen? So I started to have to make sure I was closer to him when he was in it just in case of a spill. Luckily, the floor isn't that far away and it was carpet :)

The bumbo chair says age 3-12 months, and I agree, 3 months with some head support is all you need.  Do keep it on the ground though....  Squirmy babies or ones with very little chub can get out, as pp mentioned.

Just dropped in to agree with all pps.  Also, you can get a little table/tray for the bumbo which helps to stop (or at least it slows down ;)) any escape attempts.

I used a Bumbo loads with Sophie from just before 4mo and she was sitting unaided and steady (not wobbly!) before she was 6 mo.

Then when I had Alex I had loaned the Bumbo to a friend who took aaaaages to give it back, and hence didn't use it with him. He sat unaided and steady just before 8 mo.

Coincidence? I don't think so, they are very similar in height/ weight/ build.. I say hooray for Bumbos!

MMMMMMmmmmm Bumbo. Be very careful I have heard about lots of accidents, but if you use your common sense all will be fine. Don't leave unsupervised EVER. I heard about one child will a fractured skull who flipped out backwards and cracked his head on tiles
Sorry to spoil the vibe  :-\

We started using the Bumbo for picture posing at 3 mos.  However, at 6 mos DS did too much pushing back with his feet so we discontinued use.  We didn't get much use out of ours.

I don't know if Bumbos actually help them sit on their own... DD used hers daily from 3 months on, and only sat independent at 7.5 months...  I know friends who didn't have a bumbo had a sitting child at 5 months... there's no rhyme or reason to these things, I think.

Same here.  At around 6 months, DS worked out how to arch his back just right so as to ALMOST flip himself out of it.  But while it did work, it was fantastic.
