14 week old wont lie down during A time
« on: July 06, 2009, 15:13:29 pm »
HI, my 14 week old is only happy during A time if: sat on lap or in a seat. If I put him on his mat on the floor he is v unhappy. However babies need floor and tummy time so not sure what to do or why he is like this. Does anyone have similar prob?

Lots of babies hate tummy time  :(.

How is he kicking on his back?

Is he better if you sit with him?

What about using a pillow to lean him on to hold him up a bit? I wonder if it because he can't see what is going on around him.

he is ok if I talk to him, but when I stop he starts crying again. Do you think it could be stomach acid or something?

I would think that if it was stomach acid or reflux that he wouldn't be happy at all, even when you are talking to him.  Have you seen this thread?

Reflux would give you trouble with feeding and sleeping as well - as your baby would hate to lie flat to sleep. They often really struggle to get to sleep and then wake repeatedly through the night.

I think it sounds as though he isn't confident when you are out of sight. Have you tried placing toys above him so he was something fun to look at?

For babies who don't like tummy time you can try placing him on your tummy while you lie on a sofa, so he can see your face (and forget he is doing tummy time!).
My DD hated tummy time, but she also had a huge head, so I imagine it was heavy to hold up   :P

You could carry him in a sling if you need to get something done and he is grumpy. I cooked a few dinners like that when DS was a newborn.

I agree with placing them on your tummy.  We had to use a small bobby pillow with our DS to get him comfortable with tummy time on the floor.  I also used the black on white and white on black books by T. Hoban to give him something to focus on.

Thanks girls,

yes heavy distraction (talking/singing/tv(!)) seems to work for 2 minutes or so. But even better than that, today at baby massage class (he has a towel under him) when it was tummy time, he started chewing the towel like mad and stayed on his tummy for five minutes, amazing. Also, when on his back he seems ok if he is sucking/biting his hand. He always need something in his mouth, but is not overly keen on the dummy!!! I thnk he wants to bite rather then suck.

Yes I have noticed that he cries when I leave the room- is this normal @this age? DS1 didnt notice this till he was about 5 months.
