3 week old delatching and crying
« on: July 14, 2009, 05:01:40 am »
I have had no problems with breastfeeding up until today.  Every feeding, my 3 week old is hungry and latches well, but then she pulls off with a cry and is quite frustrated.  Then mid crying, she relatches, sucks a few times, delatches crying and again and again and again. I can hear her taking in more air today and I can think of two things:

- last night we gave her a bottle to try and she took to it alright - because it was easier to drink from a bottle, maybe her latch isn't as good or she's become lazy on the breast?
- i have a strong letdown so it may be that it's too much for her but I don't think that is any different from before...

Any ideas on why that may be?

Thanks.

She could have some excess gas from the bottle - was it EBM?  It might also be that the letdown is bothering her particularly - is it any better when you nurse lying down?  Any chance that she might be going through a growth spurt and is extra hungry?  Is she nursing for a while before she breaks off or right away?

My lo did this when I gave him a bottle.  Once I switched to a slower nipple and only limmited to one bottle a day, he got better.  He also did this when realy hungry and had a slow letdown and also when there was to mush noise and he was tired.

You may want to consider that your LO could have reflux or an intolerance to something in your diet.  In my experience the most common culprit for food intolerances is milk proteins with wheat coming in second.

Have a look at this thread http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=117061.0 There is a good list of things that might indicate an overactive letdown halfway down page 2 as well as some things you can do to help stop the issue from interfering with BFing.

If you think that reflux may be the issue then have a look at this thread http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=654.0.

This link has some info about milk protein intolerances http://www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz/Food/LactoseIntolerancevsMilkProteinAllergy.htm  If you do suspect a milk protein intolerance you would be best to become a 'label reader' and look on every box/package etc to see if there is ANY milk products/proteins in the product.  This thread has a list of names that milk proteins hide under http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=66236.0.  This link also has a list of names used http://www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz/Food/MilkRelatedIngredientsandDairyFoodItems.htm

Oh my!!! my LO is allergic to milk.  He is now on soy formula.  didn't know that the delatching could have been caused by what I was eating.  Interesting!!!!

thanks for the comments.  it turns out that i had mastitis and went on antibiotics the next day - i'm guessing that was the problem although i had no pain at the time of the 'delatching episodes!
