Teats
« on: July 14, 2009, 09:36:12 am »
Hi!
Just wanted to ask - is there a physical/medical reason why I need to change my DS's teats to a bigger size? He is 6 mths and 3 weeks and takes approx 28 ozs of formula a day plus solids. He is only on number 2 avent and I know this is for younger babies and he "should" be on 4's. Tried him on 3's a month ago and did not like it - spluttering etc. Should I have persevered with it? what would be the benefits to having a faster teat for him? Always been cautious as he was very very sicky when younger and still a bit now.
Thanks!

I only changed DD up to the next flow when she started becoming frustrated while eating and it seemed to take ages for her to finish her bottles.  She moved up to medium flows at 4 months and then to fast flows at 8 months.  These days she's a very efficient eater and usually drains an 8 oz. bottle in less than 10 minutes, sometimes it takes only 5 minutes!  If your DS is feeding efficiently on the #2's then I don't see any reason to change.  If that changes, he starts dawdling and seems to be getting frustrated with the flow, then I'd try the #3's again.  It took DD a few days to adjust to the faster flow when I changed her up - I usually did it on a Friday and by the Sunday she'd be eating normally again.

Hi Nell,
We only changed up when DD started to have trouble taking her usu amount of feed. So I would say if you lo is happy and taking what he would normally then don't be concerned.......

Your lo is soooo cute!  :)

Like the others said, if your lo seems frustrated and having trouble getting enough formula you might want to try the next size up.  My lo's never followed the "recommended" teat size.  They both needed faster flow pretty young.

Just follow your lo and if he seems happy with the current teats and is drinking enough... No worries.   :)
