when to stop sterilising bottles
« on: July 18, 2009, 09:52:12 am »
Hi,
I have seen this asked before but could not find it. My DS is 8.5 months. Can I stop sterilising bottles now and just put them through the dishwasher?
thanks
Becky

Depends on where in the world you are  :P. Guidelines differ.

The UK says 12 months for stopping, but I believe the US is earlier. The reason for this is that their dishwashers are actually a lot hotter.

I stopped at 11 mths after fishing DH's shoe out of his mouth. It just suddenly seemed stupid.

Personal choice at the end of the day I think.

I agree it does differ from country to country.

I also think it may differ from areas too.  We are in the UK and were told that it was ok to stop steralising at 6 months and we just washed with normal soapy water.

I stopped at 11 months too, seems silly when they get all sorts in their mouths!

I was told 12 months by my HV (UK) as even though they put all sorts in their mouths milk breeds nastier bugs. However I would think a dishwasher washes hotter than handwashing (can't you tell I haven't got one ::)) so if you are happy with it then I wouls do it!

Agree with the others, it depends on where you live what the guidelines are.

With my first born we sterilized till 6 months then started just putting them in the dishwasher.

With my second we used the dishwasher right from the start...so far so good.   ;)

I stopped sterilising at 12 months with my older 2, will probably do the same this time round too.

my dr. said we could stop at 6months, we put them in the dishwasher and it seems fine. As pps said, with all the things they stick in their mouth it seems pointless after a while.

We stopped boiling to sterilize at 4 months - she was putting everything in her mouth (including the cat!) at that point.  Since then we just run through the dishwasher - we have a SaniCycle that gets the water really hot so I don't worry about them not being really clean.
