How long should my 13 day old DS sleep btw feeds?
« on: August 17, 2009, 15:56:50 pm »
Hi girls and welcome back - goodness it's SO nice to be back ;D

Just wanted to ask a few questions :P
Leo had been going 2-3 hours btw feeds, but yesterday and today he's been going every hour :P Extremely exhausting for me, especially with a spirited 3.5 around!
In fact today, I broke down and sobbed - I've spent the last 2 days sat ALL day on the sofa, not even having the time to shower or dress and that alone makes me feel sh!te :'(

I feel my milk supply isn't so 'full' when I BF every hour so maybe isn't satisfying him and that's why he isn't sleeping as long? How can I explain - it's like my nipple goes all slippery and he doesn't latch on as firmly as he does when my boobs are obviously full. When he sleeps longer btw feeds, he feeds for a lot longer.
Is it just a case of early days yet?

I also mentioned on the temp board that I had been giving him a dummy after a feed and this seemed to work as he slept a bit longer - but then I read that introducing a dummy so early could interfere with BF and I deffo don't want that to happen.

I'd be grateful of some hugs and any advice girls

TIA
Lis xx

Sounds like a growth spurt to me? I know my boys went crazy feeding constantly for a few days at around 2 wks and again around 6wks, if it is a gs the best thing to do is just feed him when he wants it until it is over, this will def help boost your supply to what he needs and he should start to go longer between feeds again soon :) It is hard work the first few weeks but you have to believe you can survive and you will :-* I still have days when I don't manage to shower or dress and my boys are 16wks ::)

Thanks Sammy Nik :-* But you have twins and another LO - you are entitled never ever to get dressed again until they are all 21 years old ;D  He he!!

Yes, you're right - I will survive! If you did then I certainly can!! I just had a bit of a teary day today ::) :P I remember them well from Nicholas :P
Have your boys got dummies?

hugs lis you're a great mum these are tough days, growth spurts take lots out of you and you are chock full of hormones so those do not help one bit, but luckily gs' are only a couple days max. sorry you had a hard day!  xxxxx

I agree with the growth spurt idea.  DS2 is now 3 weeks and did the same thing about a week ago, including the unlatching, etc.  Now back on track.  Read in a parenting book (can't remember which one) about growth spurts and increased BFing at 2 and 6 wk also.

Hugs Lis, those hormones really do mess with you, you are def allowed to have teary days, I know it might not be fun but spending days sitting the sofa is what you should be doing at the moment :P

Thanks though cos next time DH gets home and i'm still not dressed i'm gonna say but Lis from BW said ...... ;D

Yes my 2 have got dummies, couldn't cope without them ::) All 3 of my boys had them before they left the hospital and I have to say, in my (personal) opinion dummies don't interfere with BF unless you have big latch problems. Where I work we often give babies dummies to get some sucking practice before they are able to feed and most don't have a prob establishing feeding. Take these forced sofa days as some quality cuddle time, it's not long before they won't stay still long enough to cuddle any more.

Maisie was every hour at the start, she still sometimes is every 2 hours in the day now lol I don't think I have the best milk supply but it seem to be working for us and we are both enjoying it  :D

She has a dummy and I dont think its made much of a differece, she also takes a bottle well and I think its becuase she is used to the dummy.

Hope the growth spurt ends and you get some rest, I think Maisie is on a constant growth spurt  ::) ;)

Hugs Lis :-*
I'm with the others on the GS thing, I'd give him another day or so and see if it settles down again (I know that sounds like forever at this moment). Don't worry about too much about getting dressed, but try and hop in the shower ... it'll make you feel heaps better ... your Mum's still there right? Can she hold him while N watches a dvd or something in the morning so you can feel a little more prepared to start the day?
Wish I could swim over and see you - but call me anytime, even if it's just to cry, shout or moan. :-*
Is he still doing a good sleep at night?

Thanks girls :-*
Your hugs and advice mean so much :-*
He's been much better these past few days so It probably was a little growth spurt! He put on 200g last week ;D
Last night though, he woke up every 2 hours :( I suppose I was spoilt with the 4-5 hours during the night :P And today I've got a sore throat - hope to goodness I'm not coming down with something - I always get a sore throat when I'm run down or tired :(

I've kept on with the dummy as it hasn't had any effect on his latch or my supply. He is really a sucky boy ;)

Thanks again
