Night terrors-how do you deal with it?
« on: August 17, 2009, 17:06:15 pm »
Ok I just posted this on the temp site before I realizes this one is back up  ;D

My 3yr old had a terrible night terror last night, and I really didn't know how to handle it. It started at about 2am with a ear ear-piercing scream. When I got to her she literally climbed up me saying that there is snakes in her bed (this is the 2nd night terror ever and both about snakes-not sure where the snakes come from). To make a long story short I could not get her to go back to her bed because of the fear and took her to my bed. It is the only the 2nd time since she was born that she ended up in our bed, the other time with the other night terror) . Well it didn't work as she kept screaming every few minutes and every movement would scare her. So no sleep for both of us from 2am.

Now I know that BW for Toddlers suggest that you DON"T ever bring them to your bed (and I can see why as she was already angling at bedtime for that LOL) but settle them in their own rooms but it was impossible for me to settle her in her room never mind put her back in her bed. What do I do?  :-\ :-\

Hi Elmarie,

Sorry your LO is ahving night terrors but we totally resort to DS coming to our bed and cuddlinmg up there with us when he has night terrors. Its works fine for us, no issues.

Thanks Mukta, good to see you're back.  The problem is that it actually didn't work-I held her hand the whole night but she kept screaming out of fear until 5.30 this morning when I decided this is enough lets just get up.  I couldn't console her at all and that is what was worrying..

what we do is gently turn all the lights  or say of the next room or something so DS room is vsible so the LO can be reassured there is nothing there, or soemtime sgo cuddle on the couch so it does not remind him of a bed etc IYKWIM. Distrcat with lullaby or stroy or something. Basically comp;letly break the sleep. Night terror sis like ahving a bad dream you cant wake out of on your own, so you have to wake them up..at least thats whats worked for us.
