Breakfast ideas
« on: August 26, 2009, 12:24:42 pm »
Hi everyone - just wondered if anyone had any suggestions for breakfasts as we're stuck in a bit of a rut. So far, we have weetabix + fruit, porridge (normal + fruit, or Plum Baby), Plum Baby Museli. I have lately been giving her rice krispies - was reluctant at first until I realised there was less sugar in them than bran flakes, which she sometimes has when I have them. Anyone know of any good low-sugar breakfast cereals (UK)? I'd be quite pleased to get her off the Plum baby stuff as it's a bit babyish for her (not much texture) and expensive.

Shreddies, Cheerios, Ready Brek, or Corn Flakes are all pretty good for cereals.  You could also try toast with butter, or bit of jam, or peanut butter if you're ok with that (allergy wise); scrambled eggs, home made pancakes, muesli and yogurt,  bagel with cream cheese, omelettes...

Raisin Wheats are good.....Kellogs do some and Sainsbury's do their own. They are bascially shredded wheats with a raisin filling, no added sugar. I think some brands have sugar but not Kellogs or Sainsburys.

Oatibix Flakes have less sugar than Shreddies...both are a big hit here! Toasted wheat flakes from health food shops have no added sugar and are actually quite tasty  :P

Leo has come around to scrambled eggs. Also raisin toast. I do a yummy low fat bircher muesli. It's divine! Though Leo is the only one that turns his nose up at it, but I'm persisting  :P  Also since DD was about 1.5 she ate weetbix with raw muesli sprinkled on top. No need for sugar and tastes nice.

we do yoghurt smoothies a lot for breakfast... yogurt, various fruits, flax seed, usually a frozen pureed veggie cube (i know!!!), some oat or wheat bran. luke loves them.

my bircher muesli  :)

2 cups rolled oats, soak in 250mls or so of apple juice overnight. (I cover with a tea towel and put in fridge)
in the morning add 1 mashed banana, about 100grams of yoghurt, 1 cup raspberries (or for a more sweet version add tinned peaches). I add grated pear or apple sometimes.

It's really filling.
