Wow. Well I would start as late in the day as possible, so you're doing a good portion of the driving while he is having his main nighttime sleep. As for the driving while he's awake: loads of snacks, CDs of nursery rhymes which you can all sing/clap along to, a few new toys featuring favourite things (ie for my LO this would be a few new toys with wheels), his lovey (of course). I'd plan to stop for at least 30-45 mins every 1.5-2 hrs so he can blow off steam and stretch his legs. If you plan ahead, you can probably find out which motorway service stations have play areas.

Good luck! It's 11 hours up to my aunts in Scotland and I haven't even considered doing it with Stan - think when we go we'll do it by train.

I know no one wants to plop their child in front of a tv for long periods of time, but, there are exceptions!! We did a 9+ hr road trip with out 16 month old twins and it was a godsend that we had a portable DVD player. Snacks help too, but I'm not sure we would have made it without more tears if we didn't have the movies! Good luck!

Thanks guys!  I wouldn't be making the trip however my husband's mum and dad live up there and they cannot come down to see us!  I am dreading the journey!!

We have been thinking of a DVD player so may have to invest!  Will also get some new toys - tractors seem to be favourite at the moment!!!

Thanks again!

A DVD player!  I've spent the last 6 months driving round the States with my lo's and it has been a life saver.  Keeps them quiet for hours!
