"Solid" desserts
« on: September 06, 2009, 18:52:07 pm »
Hi! Looking for your help yet again!
My DS is 8 and a half mths and eats very well, enjoying everything we give him. He previously had a problem with excessive sickness and was a "happy spitter". Since eating less pureed meals this has got a lot better and we have realised that he is now only sick if he has "sloppy" desserts eg pureed fruits, yogurts. He is not too bad with fromage frais as i thicken it with banana
What I need is some ideas for more solid desserts. At the moment he either has thickened fromage frais as mentioned, banana pieces or malt loaf. He has had pieces of organic fruit cake at nursery but obviously anything cakey has sugar in it which I don't mind sometimes but not every day. Have done softened fruits but would like other ideas.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Nell xxx

I do pieces of banana or blueberries. Raisins or raisin bread now he is older.

My DS is the same with his reflux - has sloppy stuff as it makes him throw.

TBH I am always at a bit of a loss for pudding - so I will follow along and see if anyone has any ideas for us.

Know what you mean about the sugar. Actually I think I have a suger free banana cake recipe in a book somewhere if you are interested. I haven't tried it yet though.

Hi Lizj,

I am interested in that recipe - thanks!
Last time I posted we hadn't done raisins but we do now and DS loves them! Haven't done other fruit in pieces apart from banana as I am worried about choking esp with something like apple. I may try it in tiny pieces this week though.
Thanks for your reply,

Leave raw apple until 12 mths or so as they can bite it off in large chunks. You could try it grated though - that is safe.

Have your tried any other dried fruits? Like apple or aprict cut into small pieces?

I'll post the recipe tomorrow  :-*

Have you tried making rice pudding? I made it for my LO so that it was solid, you could cut fingers from it and eat it as finger food. I cut out all the sugar in the recipe and just put a load of raisins in it - delicious!! Plus a good way to get more calories in - you could probably make it with formula or bm if you weren't keen on using cow's milk. If you want I can find the recipe?

Baked apple or pears are nice, or even blasted in the microwave (and then cooled for a LONG time) to soften them.  Dried prunes, or tinned prunes in juice.  Tinned fruit is great - peaches, pears etc, I used to score large pieces so that they were less slippery for DS.

Semolina can be made thick and baked solid too and I either make with EBM or add pureed pears or apples instead of sugar to sweeten.
What about sugar free jelly with fruit pieces in? And pancakes/waffles with fruit puree in the mix.
You can also use fruit puree in cake mix instead of sugar.
