Question about long am/short pm nap? I am getting desperate!
« on: September 15, 2009, 14:33:08 pm »
I have been attempting to follow the short am/long pm nap to help out with the EWs that my 10moth old daughter has been having.  We are on day 15 and I have only seen a slight improvement.  She has been waking around 6am and has been restless between the hours of 3-4am. Anyhow, I was reading older posts and am thinking that she may be suitable for long am/short pm nap. I have also read over and over 10/11 month sleep gone wonky.
How do I know what method will work better for my textbook/angel baby.

Below is what I have been observing:
She doesn't fight me on naps
I know she can handle a long first A if I keep her busy, but can also go down early.
She doesn't like to have a long last A.  When the three hour mark hits, she begins to rub her eyes and above her eyebrows get red-that means she is tired.
She always napped well in the am and pm.
Now that I have been shortening the am nap, she can sleep close to two hours in the pm. Even with this long pm nap, she seems to want to go to bed early

Can anyone please give me some advice.? I was planning to try to extend her last A for 3 days to see if that helps.
But what signs am I supposed to look for a long am/short pm nap?

Hi there Sabs, bumping this up for you :-)  Finn is only 6 months so I have no real advice because I would have directed you to the links and also just say what you probably don't want to hear which is you need a bit of Time and Development.  If you push out her last A can you just drag out the bedtime routine, sometimes it buys you a bit of extra time before they start to go loco from being too OT...like a slightly longer bath, slightly longer massage etc.  You can sneak minutes in that way.  Tack 5 mins on each piece of the bedtime routine until you have about 15 mins and do this for about 3 days.

Thanks for replying as I am getting desperate at the moment. :'( I did successfully extend her bedtime last night by doing a longer wind down, so her total A time was 3.25hrs and was asleep by 7:30pm. Of course, this morning, she was up at 5:45am and didn't go back down. I tried some AP, and nothing!! I finally gave up and started our day at 6:45am. Surprisingly, she lasted her A time, as we were at my parents house, but I let her sleep a long am nap.  I am sure is is a little confused now.  Tomorrow, I am going to try again, but we are at my parents house again.  This is very frustrating......

Hi there Sabs, could you post your routine.  I wonder if that morning nap is skewing things because she is using it as night sleep?  It might be time to cut back on her morning nap.

I have cut her naps to one hour for the past 15 days and her EWs got worse. Now I am trying the long am nap. I am thinking she is not quite ready to have a shorter am. If her nap is shortened, she does nap well in the pm, but can't handle last A time.
This was our routine with the short am/long pm nap:

wake 7am*EWs would range from 5:45-6am.
A 7-:10:20
nap one 10:20-11:20
A 11:20-2:20
nap two 2:20-4:15
A 4:15-7:30pm(was trying to stretch this but she was always cranky)
s 7:30pm

Now I am trying the long am nap.
