Second nap is puzzling me
« on: September 17, 2009, 20:27:27 pm »
DS is a few days shy of 5mths. I am having problems with his second nap. It is ALWAYS 45 minutes, no matter what I do. He ALWAYS wakes up tired. It is the only nap that is 45 minutes. First nap is solid and great (90% of the time) and catnap is always 30 minutes - if he takes it.

My question is this: if you have experienced this, did it go away after you dropped the catnap (I'm pretty sure it won't, but looking for some hope!), and if not, how did you fix it?

Here is his routine on weekdays. We aim for 4hr EASY.

700- E/A
900- S
1030 - E/A *I need to wake him because I have to leave at 11 to pick up DS1 at school
1230- S
115 - awake, then S about 10 minutes later in carrier
230/3 - E/A/
430/5 - S
5/530 - A
600- bath
630- E/bed

On weekends, everything is bumped a half hour from 1030 on because I don't have to p/u ds from school obviously.

He goes down well for his 1st and 2nd naps. Catnap, is generally a battle. We try and steal one when we can, but generally, it is a complete failure.

When he wakes at 115, I end up with him in the carrier, and he falls back asleep. I try and lay him down 20-30 minutes later, but he usually wakes 10 minutes later mad and wants back in. So in the end, he sleeps in the carrier until E time.

I have tried, W2S, different A times, he isn't hungry or OT or overstimulated. I ended up watching him a few times, and he ends up just popping his eyes open, lifting his legs, and that's it. He is awake! He is still swaddled, but ds1 was for some time as well and it never seemed to be a huge issue. DS doesn't seem 'ready' to let it go.

I have also tried to keep him in his room to get him back to sleep. He used to fall back asleep with me holding him for awhile, but that time has increased and my back and arms cannot take it anymore physically.

What gives?!

Hi there,

Have you tried HTTJ? he is obviously needing that sleep if he wakes up tired and if you can get him back to sleep again within 10mins.

I did do that a few times, but he would still wake about 10 later if I did get him back to sleep.
More recently, when I hold them down, I'd even cover his eyes (he's prone to like to look around and NOT want to sleep when he does). He'd end up just turning his head side to side to try and see SOMETHING, anything, then just get plain mad that someone was restraining him.

How long should it take to HTTJ? Usually takes me about 20 till he stops. But like I said, he still seems to wake 10 minutes later.

usually its about 20mins. have you tried darkening his room? we put a black blanket over our LO's windows cos if he saw anything (even the pattern on his sheets) it would distract him
