OMG please help
« on: September 23, 2009, 02:44:39 am »
Hi everyone, I haven't been on here for a while since I had catnapping issues with my son who is now 2.5yrs.  The support and advice I got was amazing and I truly thank everyone.
Anyway now we have a little girl who is nearly 3 months old.  She has reflux and is on losec twice a day which is really helping her feeding and she isn't screaming after each feed anymore which is nice!  She is totally breastfed.
She was the perfect little angel baby for the first 2 weeks and then all hell broke loose and she has lost it ever since the 3 week growth spurt.  She sleeps really well overnight but is such a battle during the day.  The schedule I aim for is;
E 7am wake and breastfeed
A  7.30-8.30am
S 8.30am.  Wrap her and put in crib before she nodds off and straight to sleep.  Usually only last 15-20minutes with sometimes lasting 40-45mins.  I try and resettle her and then put her in the swing if she won't resettle and she goes straight back to sleep until next feed.

E 10.30am breastfeed
A 11-12noon
S 12noon same as above

E 2pm breastfeed
A 2.30-3.30pm
S 3.30pm same as above

E 5pm Breastfeed
A bath 6pm
S sleep after top up breastfeed by 7pm

E dreamfeed at 10.30pm
Most nights only wakes around 3-4am for a really quick feed and then back to sleep till at least 6.30am if not 7am.

I guess my question after all that is, am I making a bad habbit by putting her in the swing to encourage longer napping?  With my son as soon as he woke after the 45mins I put him in the pram or the car and encouraged longer napping and eventually her slept longer, but the swing worries me.  I think she likes the swing because of her reflux.
Why would she only be sleeping 15-20mins though?  That's not even a sleep cycle.  Is it just over tiredness maybe?  Should I go back to 3Hr EASY to drop her A time a bit?
Please any help would be greatly appreciated.
Shannon

Hi! Congratualtions on your new little one!
The only thing i would suggest is reduce her A time to one hour (including bfing) and see if that helps. So if she wakes at 7am, put her down at 8am. I know it sounds crazy especially if she takes 30mins to bf but it may help...
20 min naps does sound like OT, but if she has reflux, it could be that that is bothering her. The swing is obviously helping make her feel better. What about her cot? Have you propped up one side of the mattress for when she sleeps? Apparently that helps a lot with reflux babies.

Hi thanks for the quick reply. Yes her cot is elevated.  Its just  so strange that she sleeps so well at night in the cot but not during the day.

My daughter (4 months) is the same way.  Sleeps great at night, but has trouble napping during the day, and she really likes to be in the swing.  I find that her reflux is better if during her A time she doesn't lie down flat, I always have her propped up.
