Bad Bad Reaction to Peanut Butter!
« on: September 23, 2009, 19:33:30 pm »
My son has never been tested for peanut butter, just stayed away from it as he has allergies to egg, oats, and barley. Well my daughter was eating pb and toast, he got some on his hand, smeared on his face.  He just turned 2.  I noticed a few minutes later and wiped it from his face.

His face swelled up and was red with hives all over it. Took him to the doc and he's fine now, eyes still puffy though.

I'm just glad he didn't eat any of it!! Crikey! Really scary though.  Least now I know for sure he DEFINITELY cannot have it!

OMG!  Sooo glad that you found out and that it wasn't any worse than it could have been. Lots of hugs for what must have been a scary moment!

Sheesh!  Well, that's one way of testing.  Did the doc give you an epi-pen or does he already have one for other allergies?  'Cause if that's the reaction he has on his first exposure, then who knows how bad a second exposure could be?

Yikes! I was also wondering about the epipen...my nephew has nut and egg allergies and they have the twinject kind with two doses in it and they also take benadryl where ever they go too.

how scary for you to see that kind of reaction.  guess that's the end of PB in your house then ;) and DD will have to have it somewhere else where you can't run the risk of him getting to the jar / scrape left on a plate.

BIG HUGS!!!!!

Glad everything turned out O.K.  My soon is allergic to dairy and peanuts.  We do take the EpiPen and the Benadryl everywhere.  Have you tried almond butter?  It's delicious and that way, your LO won't be tempeted to try out sister's pbj  ;)

Hehe, yes thankfully we have the epi-pen already for his other food allergies!  I did give him Benadryl too, hopefully that helped with the itching and swelling.  It's so weird because no body in our families has any major food allergies.  I really wasn't expecting him to have this type of reaction when I wiped it off his face.  Crazy scary.

I've heard that even having other people in your family with any type of allergy raises the risk of your kids having a severe allergy.

Nobody in our family is allergic to anything either.  Go figure!
