Bedtime for a 23 month old on a no nap day??
« on: September 26, 2009, 17:16:38 pm »
Quick question:

Lyle had a glorious 11 hours of night sleep last night.

However,

He decided he just didn't want a nap today.

He woke at 6:50ish - maybe a tad before.

When should I do bedtime?

That should say 11 hours last night, right Sherry??? Lol!

Hmmmm.......hard one as you don't want to put him down too early but I know how easily he gets OT.  See how he's going but I'd probably do 630pm.

oops. yes. thanks for catching that :) I'll change it.

Thanks. I'll do my best. He's doing fine. He is just now acting like he would except going down. It's almost 3:30. Got a tad cranky so I gave him a bath.

I would go as close as possible to normal bedtime.  Just have him ready for bed earlier so as soon as he seems really tired you can tuck him in straight away.

Thanks guys. He's yawning lots now. But the mood is fine.

I know you guys already know this, but my only concern is catching him when it's too late. You know he has a very fine history of losing it in one breathe. I don't want him to go down too OT. Then he'll have an EW and be super tired and grumpy. I've he's going to wake early I'd rather it be after a good solid night's sleep, of hopefully at least 11 hours. :)

Different things for different children, but if my nearly-3-year-old doesn't nap, then I aim to get her to bed about 30-45 minutes earlier than usual (and on one occasion 1h15 - and she slept for nearly 13 hours!).  I have a sleepy one, though, and her nights are rarely shorter than 11 hours, so it might not be the same for your lo if 11 hours is long.

It's so hard to know. This is our first no nap day. We have had 30 min naps a few times do to the car. And if I get him into bed before he is OT he will make up some sleep.

When we transitioned to 1 nap he did sleep 12 hours at night for a little while. So it is possible if I call the shots right.

7:45/8 is our normal bedtime right now, with an A time of 5.5-6 hours after his nap.

My gut is telling me that 6 might be too early and 7:30 will be too late. So some where in there :)

He's slowing down a lot. Getting a little whiny. But still very manageable. I can't believe he is holding up so well. :)

The eternal guessing game!  I hope you get it right.  I have to say, the main reason mine goes down early when she hasn't napped is that she is such a PITA that I am desperate for her to go to bed... :-[ :P

Great news.  Ethan is still raring to go as well!  Can't believe they're both having their first no nap day on the same day!  I think I'll put him down at 7pm as that's when Amy goes down anyway but will have him ready before then if he's starting to get cranky.  He didn't get up till 840am though so hoping he'll be fine till then!

Oh and we defiantly have bottom two molars coming through.  Can see them but they haven't broken through yet!  Wouldn't it be great if they all came in before we get home in 2.5 weeks time!!!

Karen - that would be awesome. A nice 2 year old b-day present for you!! I can't wait until teething is done. I was wondering if it had something to do with teeth as well. Just because I know that has been a major play up reason for Jarrah. It is crazy that they are choosing to do this on the same day. I'm glad that other's in our BC have experienced this already, or I would probably be going crazy with the WTH thoughts :)

He's been so manageable though that I would find it hard to believe that it is teething, but you know how unpredicatable it can all be. I just kissed his forehead and it did feel a little warm.

Going to do dinner at 5. And then I guess diaper and PJs at 5:45 - just incase it all goes to h&ll after that.

When they don't nap you don't want them in bed any later than 12hrs after they woke up. So i would be aiming for 6.30pm bedtime.

How did it go Sherry?  E went down just after 7pm and think he'd gone straight to sleep.  Gave him some meds at bedtime as when I was brushing his teeth I got to have a look at molars and the first one has started breaking through!!!

Great news Karen. Woohoo!!

Natasha.... you must have been channeling that to me :)  I didn't get your message but that is pretty much what happened.

I took him to his room at 6:30 and he was still doing great. He was in bed at 6:52 asleep before 7! No fuss, didn't have to stay. YEY!!

I'm thinking we might get at least one NW, but I have my fingers crossed for a good night and a good wake up!! I hope you get the same Karen. Here's to two great naps tomorrow :)

Great to hear that he was asleep at a reasonable time Sher.

On the no napping, I would say 75% of the time its teething, and at other times it's just that he's in a really good mood all day and more interested in playing and chatting in his cot. On those days he won;t have a melt down, he'll just soldier on although very tired.  On the teething days he will be melting down all afternoon.  I usually will try and try to get him down on those days, and relent to the car if I have to.

We can't seem to get him into bed before 7 on a no nap day, but I would say that he'll be trying to "catch" up for the next few days, wanting really long naps and still early bedtimes, say 30 mins earlier.

Best of luck!
