Egg allergy??
« on: October 04, 2009, 05:05:50 am »
Okay, so tonight for only the second time in her life I fed Spencer eggs, and for the second time had a big bedtime meltdown, at which time I noticed she had hives on her face. So, gave her benadryl and held her to sleep (this is what worried me - I have not had to do any AP since she was 6 months old except for the last time she had eggs!)

So my question is this, she has had baking and things with egg cooked in it, but had no obvious reaction, is it possible to be allergice to eggs but able to tolerate them in small amounts?

Yes, absolutely possible.  Some people can tolerate the "food item" in baked goods, but not straight.  But I would definitely call your doctor and tell them the reactions she had.  They would know more on whether or not she should have ANY egg at all.  Let us know what happens, very curious.

Making an appt tomorrow! Hopefully we can get in on my day off. I'm going to ask for a prescription for an epipen anyway just to be on the safe side. She was much better this morning, had a few raunchy burps, but seemed herself and the hives were gone.

Thanks, Heidi

Oh, also wanted to say how scared you must have been!!  I know the feeling, and it is scary.  I hope she's doing better!

The epi-pen is a very good idea.  Especially where she ate the food and had hives.  Sometimes there are reactions we cannot see, like swelling of the tongue or throat, as my doctor says, so if I see any type of reaction like this I am to give the epi-pen right away and take him to the hospital.

Yes, it was scary, because I had no idea if she had any swelling (I don't think so and her breathing was normal). My nephew has an egg and a peanut allergy so I'm already quite hypervigilant about foods I give and I feel so bad feeding it to her again! Thankfully the local hospital is only a block away too.

I hope you manage to get an epipen. We are unabke to here in the uk even though when we trialed egg in august James reacted with hives, runny mucousy bowel movements and he felt sick but was not actually sick. My son also has asthma which apparently can increase the chances of having an anaphylactic reaction but still the gp and paediatric consultant refuse to prescribe one.

I am sorry for waffling I am just very fustrated about this right now.

I have an appt for tomorrow morning, though not sure if it os our regular doctor as his wife passed away recently. He is very good about referrals and going the extra mile so I'm confident he will give me the prescription (honestly can't see why not, do they want to do an actual allergy test first Kelly?) Here they don't usually do an allergy test until they are over 2 I think. Strangely our dr thinks Spencer may have asthma and she also has huge tonsils, so that wouldn't help either!

My son is allergic to eggs (asthma too). He'd had thongs with eggs before I'd realized it. He had what his dr thought was just sensitive skin. one day he had a strawberry off the topof a sponge cake (it was mace with 11 egg whites) and his lips started to sswell. I ssummed he was allergic to strawberris. I got an appt with a pead allergist. The day befire our appot he had a bite of our eggs fro breakfast and throew up within minutes. At his appointment we mentioned this and tested him for egg allergies along with strawberries. He was tested when he was 15 months old. Also you should know that at 12 months the immunization is egg based. He now has a epi pen and gets tested once a year to see if he's out growing it. Once in a while he has some baked good with egg in it (he has fast little hands). The reaction is minimal and some benadryl does the trick.
Let me know how you get on.

Andrea,

I had actually postponed the 12 month shots because I wasn't sure if she was allergic or not, I just had a feeling she shouldn't get it. I'm going to defer the MMR shot that has the egg in it and get the rest, but def. not the flu shot as it's egg based too. She had bed ezcema when I was BF her, but it went away when I switched to formula.

Thanks,
Heidi

James has already been tested. He had his first RAST tests at 11 months and has been tested once  a year since. James had not had egg when first RAST tests were done not even as an ingredient in things. It was a high score though so we did not even trial it. When we had the last lot of tests done his consultant said that egg had come into the normal range and to trial it. James had a tiny bite of egg and got hives about 10-15 minutes later then he had stomach cramps followed by runny mucousy bowel movements and he felt sick. I have read that first reactions are often milder then say the second or third which is worrying. We have been advised not to trial it again for 1-2 years not that I intended to anyway. The consultant even said it was a serious reaction and that James must be highly allergic to it but would still not prescribe an epipen.

Well, apparently my faith in my doc was a bit misplaced, won't give an epipen or send for allergy tests. Masyn is being referred to a paed for joint pain, I'm going to see if I can get Spencer in without a referral, if not I'll try the doctor's office in the next town. Now she is terrified of being left alone in her crib for naps and bedtime, tonight she was clawing at me to try and get out and fell asleep quivering and shaking  :'(  poor baby...

Oh wow, did they give a reason as to why they won't do the testing or give an epi-pen??  I see you already have a plan for the next step, which I hope works out for you.  Where in Canada are you?  At least you know now to avoid it for sure.  I just hope you get a second opinion, and preferably with a Ped.  **HUGS** your poor daughter at bedtime...  has she been like that every night since this has happened?

I'm in Saskatchewan, if I can't get her in to the ped in Saskatoon, there is a small city near us with a few more doctors. My dr said he wouldn't prescribe it until it got the point it was affecting her breathing!!!

She has been terrified of the crib ever since, screaming and clawing to get out - if she was any taller I think she'd have thrown herself out. I stay in the room, but I've been leaning into the crib rubbing her back until she's out enough that I can sneak out, no NW's yet, but I heard her fuss a bit here and there. Could she be having nightmares about it do you think?
