cant fit second nap in?
« on: October 04, 2009, 20:26:58 pm »
Hi all. Well having a little nap problem, that is then (i think) leading to night sleep problems. Amelia has been on EASY since a few months old and thrives on it - so that is great! However, her A times are now becoming so long that there isn't enough hours in the day to fit her second nap in - she has ALWAYS needed longer A times then concidered average for her age. I know her sleepy cues well and watch them closely so i know when she is ready for a nap. The thing is, her shortest A time is generally from waking till her first nap - generally around 3 hrs. She wakes at 6 and begins to show sleepy cues around 9am. She will then nap for a good hour and half waking about 10.30. Thing is, from here she can EASILY go at LEAST 4 hours (putting next nap around 2.30pm) before showing any signs of being sleepy - this has began to push towards 5 hours! This is creating a few issues -  I am now back at work and Amelia's childminder has to leave the house around 2.30pm to do the school run - so can't put Amelia down for a nap then and due to having to get in and out of car at two dif schools she doesn't really get to nap whilst they are out. So her childminder attempts to put her down around 1pm - but this is a struggle as Amelia just isn't ready - though she does go off eventually - but then we get night time issues as she wakes around 4.30 - 5am, bright as a button - not hungry, just awake - which i am assuming is due to lack of A time during the day?! To make matters worse, over the last week or so, Amelia has not been showing tired signs till around 3pm - occasionaly later - which of course is far too late for a nap as then she won't go to bed at 7pm. I don't know what to do? Surely she can't be ready for 1 nap so soon and she def can't go from 10.30am after first nap till bedtime......?

Hope you have made sense of this -and thanks for reading!

Just to add, today she has been so cranky all day! This could be her teeth - not sure!

Rough routine

Wake 6am
E 6.20am 60z
A
E Breakfast - 7.30pm
S 9 - 1030AM

E  10.30 - 11AM 4- 7 0Z (VARIES) -
A
E Lunch 12 - 1pm
S Wants to sleep somewhere between 3 and 4pm - far too late in the day !(Used to be around 1pm - but is just not tired at this time anymore) This is where the problem lies - i need her awake by 3 - 3.30pm  otherwise she won't sleep at bedtime!

E Offer milk around 3pm - doesn't usually want it.
A
E Dinner - 4.30pm
S 6.30 - 7pm - following bath,bottle,bed routine.

(Lately has been waking lots from around 4.30 am - not hungry - just wakes)

Could you limit her morning nap to an hour so that she's tired a bit earlier in the afternoon?

I did wonder this - so worried about her being upset and grumpy if i wake her but def worth a try! She woke at 4.440am today - managed to get her off till 5.30 but that was it - we were up for the day then - i know she is still tired, though!

As you said, she is sooooo young to be on one nap, I would definitely try to stick to two for as long as possible. Even taking just 15 mins off her long nap might leave her tired enough to fit in an afternoon nap. Remember she can (instead) take a short afternoon nap.
