8 month EW ... which route should I take...WWYD
« on: October 16, 2009, 08:56:22 am »
Hi

MY DD is 8 1/2 months and her sleeping schedule is;

wake 6.30
E - 6.30
S - 9.40 - 11
S - 2.20 - 3.40
S - 7

This is more or less how its been going...

last 2 days I have had EW at about 5.15 am so only 10 hrs sleep... ive been going in giving pain meds for teething and bonjela and a cuddle its not been working so Ive been giving bf and putting her down...

she has been continuing to cry for me when I leave but more mantra so ive left her to it but she hasnt been settling and I end up getting her back up by about 6 and starting the day...

I know im going about it wrong and Im worried im creating a prop (that I have worked so hard to get out of) by BF ...the problem is that as I think she is teething (she has been for over a month now tho??!!) Im worried about doing PU/PD as I dont want to distress her,

also im leaving her when I hear her wake for about 10 misn to see if she resettles and when it escalates I go in but I think by doing this she is too awake to get back to sleep...should I go in at the first sound just to make sure i can get her back down?

after 10 hrs sleep should I even bother to try and get her back down cos I find it so hard as she just isnt tired enough but I also dont want to be starting the day at 5am!!

sorry I know its only 2 days but I know all too well from last time that before you know it you are soon stuck with the wake time!!

thanks is advance..as well as advice I would be very interested to see what other mummys are doing when they get EW?

Annette it might just be a case of extending her first A time and cutting the morning nap a tiny bit.  Not sure if you went through this at about 6/7 months or so, which is another common time for it to happen, but when LOs take a leap in A time needs, quite often at this age they "show" that by waking earlier in the morning. That way they get the longer A time that they need, and still take the nap. I may not be phrasing that well, but do you kwim?

So it could be that she is ready to push her morning A time a bit longer - start by adding 10-15 minutes to her A time for a few days. Not too much more at once, do it gradually. You may not see a change in her morning wake up for a couple of days as it takes some time to "sink in" with them.  After 3-5 days, push the morning nap another 10-15 minutes later.

While this seems to work for most babies, my LO needed a bit more to it. It wasn't enough for him to have his A time pushed, because he was still sleeping as long as he wanted. And as long as he was waking on his own from his morning nap, then he would wake early, because he knew he could just sleep as much as he needed to for his nap. So, I had to start cutting that early as well.  I didn't want to create OT by pushing the nap later AND waking him 10 minutes earlier as that seems a big change at once (my LO can be touchy with sleep!) so after two days of pushing the nap, I would wake him from it 5 minutes early...just enough to say "Hey, **I** decide, not you!"  ;)

So, routine wise, here is what I would try

Nap 1 - closer to 10am, let sleep for 1hr15minutes or so
Nap 2 around 240 - 400 (or as long as she will sleep)
Bed - closer to 715/730ish

So you are stretching her morning A time and then pushing her day out a bit for the rest of the day, incl a little bit of a later bedtime. See how you get on with this after a few days if it has started to make a difference.

thankyou so much for your advice...once again!! You are so good to me!!

What do you think I should do tho about A time from the EW? if its a 5 am wake up and I cant get her back down then should I be using a stretched A time from the normal 3 hrs 10 so go for 3 hrs 25 or should I be using a set naptime to bring day back in line...IYKWIM??

...This would mean an A time of 5 hrs if I went from 5am till 10am... Its so tricky to know what to do cos when I stick to the same first A time (3 hr 10) it means the bedtime ends up being early as well at around 5.30pm...and its a vicious circle thats then hard to get out of!!

thanks in advance for your input!

Hey Annette.  I find that with NWs to wait 10mins or so to see if they'll go back to sleep, but with EWs, I find it better to go in straight away before they're fully awake and keep them in sleep mode.  They're rested enough that if they get worked up, they aren't ready to go back to sleep.  Don't know though as each LO is so dif.  Works for me .... sometimes. leath:)

sounds like a good plan!! thanks for that!

think you are so right cos in the morning after all that sleep if I leave her too long she just gets too awake and then wants to start the day...

no EW today so im really happy!! Hoping I can get back on track...

fingers crossed
