6am wake up 6months
« on: October 28, 2009, 10:04:03 am »
Hi

I wanted to ask your opinion on my daughters length of sleep at night and if there is anything i can do.

she goes down to bed at 6.30 always asleep by 6.45-7, she usally sleeps through or wakes just once. she wakes up at 6 every morning, we give her the dummy and leave her untill 6.30. Im pretty sure she does not go back to sleep though but is happy to wait untill 6.30.

When she wakes she is very cheerful and energetic so i was wondering if 11hrs is enough sleep for her? Or do you think i should be trying to exten her sleep to 12hrs?

She does still have a catnap in the evening and is not ready to give that up yet as we found out the other night, she was soooo over tired she woke several times that night.

Thanks

Sophie x

I'd say that if she's waking up happy, then you're all good to go!  On a GREAT night, my DS will only sleep about 11.5 hours.

How much is she sleeping during the day?

my babygirl is 5.5 months and sleeps from 20:00 - 23:30 and than from 24:00 to 4:30 .... so I think 11 hrs sleep in a row sounds very good to me!
I am from Holland and I do not know what doctors etc. say in the UK, but here they say that less than 40 % sleeps through the night at 6 months. From what I know 11 hrs is very good if the baby is a happy one.
I am also curious how much your babies sleep during the day and if they get breast feeding or not. I still breast feed her, so maybe she will sleep longer as soon as I start bottle feeding.

During the day she has 3 naps, one of those will be a long one 1 1/2- 2 hrs then one 45mins and half an hour cat nap in the evening.

She is bottle fed and has two solid meals a day.

Thanks

Sophie

Hi there, same as Sara here.  11 or 11.5 for us and we bring out the band.  With her nights and naps combined, she might be on the lower end but some LO's are and if they are happy it's not really a concern.  11 hours is really good for her age and still taking decent naps...awesome :-)

If you are worried you can log her sleep in a 24 hour period over several days and just check the average.  The book indicates 15 - 18 hours until 18 months but in reality it's more like 14 - 16 around 6 months and even my paed says 14 is really good when a LO is a happy baby.  If she was cranky and fussy all day (unrelated to development or teething), you might need to revisit the issue.

It's a good idea to leave her in the crib in the morning until her day starts, let her have some independent alone time.  If she starts to get the idea that she can get out a bit earlier and socialize, she might start creeping that wake up even earlier.

RE: the CN - it may be that she needs a bit more A time between naps to give you a better second nap which can take her to bedtime without OT.  45 mins for some LO's is UT and it sounds like she's capable of longer naps on her own.  One option is to limit her AM nap to 1.5 hours and see what happens.  Or increase the A time a bit after a good 1.5 or 2 hour nap and see if she can give you another 1.5 hours nap in the afternoon.  If you don't drop the CN when she's ready you might start to get EW.
The tweaking never stops!

Hi Sophie,

You might find that when you drop the catnap which usually happens witihn the next couple of months that her sleep extends naturally but 11 hours sounds pretty good to me (can your LO tell my LO how to do that???).

I think Wendy's got a great idea: extend the A time before the 2nd nap just a bit to see if she'll sleep longer (45 min naps are typically a sign of undertired).

How did today go for you?
