new here - in need of help with 6 wk old
« on: October 30, 2009, 03:29:11 am »
Hi everyone!

I have a 6wk old who I'm relactating with.  I got off to a bad start and just in the last week I started nursing with a lactaid nursing system to stimulate my milk supply.  Things are going well and he latches good.  I've met with an LC and we have a whole relactation plan and it includes 8-10 feedings.  However, we are only able to get 7 feedings per day.

feedings 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm, 4 pm, 7 pm, 10:30 pm and only one night waking.

I have tried to introduce a 9 pm cluster but he was too tired.  Okay, back that up, I tried one night.  Not sure what I'm doing.  But he won't wake up.  Also I can't get him to BF at the dreamfeed.

Since I have the SNS system and I don't make enough it is a bit hard to do the night feeds in the dark but I'm willing to try.

How can I implement additional feedings without throwing off the whole EASY schedule?  He is so on target and textbook and I admit I'm loving how he's almost sleeping through the night and has great naps that I don't want to sabbotage it by messing up our routine with more feedings.

should I give the cluster another try?  How do I rouse him enough to take the breast instead of the bottle at night?  any help is appreciated!

Hi!

Congratulations on your decision with breastfeeding - it sounds like your making a huge effort and doing a fantastic job!! Well done you! ;D

I'm mostly bumping this for you as I have zero experience with relaxtation. However, with the cluster feeds, have you thought of doing 4, 6, and 8pm? That's how I clusterfed my ds when he was young, and it might prevent that 'too-tired' 9pm feed. What do you think?

Also, have you seen this FAQ? http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=143453.0

Hi there!  Well the last two nights we've got 8 feeds in!  He wanted to cluster on his own it seems.  BUT, I LOVE the 4, 6 and 8.  Do I completely wake him for the cluster at 8pm?  Should I do it in the living room or keep it low key in his bedroom like an early dreamfeed?

We're getting much better with our feeds and BF.  I can't wait until I get a supply of some sort.  My LC says I'm on track for a full supply in the 5 weeks.  Right now I make 4 oz a day, enough for one feed to not be suplemented with formula which is a GREAT start.  He just loves it and so do I.  What a great feeling it is to provide food to my baby, nothing else like it.

BIG CONGRATS to you for doing so well.

My kids never would dreamfeed.  They were either awake for it or slept without eating.  As for where/how to do the 8 pm feed... is he sleeping right after it?  Do you WANT him to sleep right after?  If either of those are yes, then I'd try quietly in his room.  Can't hurt.  If he won't sleep, you can always take him out for a little more A time before trying "bedtime" again.

I tried not to wake Dylan, with mixed results.  I gently lifted him out of the crib and fed him in the chair in his room, in the dark like a dreamfeed. Sometimes he woke up, but usually drifted back off quite easily.  At that young age I didn't worry about feeding to sleep for clusters and df, I just laid him back in his crib when we were done with the feed.

Hi there!  Things are steadily improving!  I can supplement 2 feedings now with only breast milk and the rest formula.  He slept through the night last night.  He seems to want to cluster on his own schedule now.  STarting after the 4 pm he will only take 45 min naps after that and be awake just for 6 pm and 8 pm feeds!!!!!!!!!!  I skipped the dream feed last night and he was basically asleep and did not eat from 8 pm to 6:45 am last night!  Not one peep!

The bad news is that I was horribly engorged as I slept through too.  BUT I was able to give him ONE entire feed that morning directly from the breast without the lact-aid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Woo hoo!  However, I need to pump at night to build up my supply so I'll set an alarm now for a time of the night where I know he would usually be waking up anyway and if he hasn't then I will pump at that time.  Otherwise I'll just let him breastfeed and not supplement since he seems to not need to eat a full feed at night now.  I also pumped 1.5 oz at two pumpings today!  So things are improving!

Thanks for the wonderful suggestion, we are getting so much better at breastfeeding and he now really doesn't like the bottle much.  I think he really prefers the warmth and closeness of breastfeeding.  I did give a bottle today as DD was giving me some trouble and I needed to be up and down quite a bit.  But he was fussy and still rooting even after a full feed so I just let him suckle on me, even though he wasn't feeding and it calmed him down.  I think he missed my boobs! ;-)

Anyway, thanks again!

Okay, just another update.  He does not even want the 8 pm feeding anymore and only wakes up once per night and it varies in its time.  So here is how we have our day:

7 am, 10 am, 1 pm, 4 pm, 6 pm a quick nursing session with no supplement at 7 pm (in bed now) and he will sleep until he wakes usually at 4 am sometimes 1 am I never know.  Other days he sleeps right through.  I will wake up and pump at 1 am regardless.

I pump in between all of those sessions too to build up supply.  As of our last checkup I'm making 50% of his daily requirement!  I'm on track for full supply, I'm so thrilled!  It has taken 4 weeks but well worth it!
