DS rolls on to his back then wakes - argh!!
« on: November 08, 2009, 22:06:26 pm »
Pls pls help me with this... I need lots of great advice and a miracle resulting in all of us getting a good - no great nights sleep!!!

DS is 5 months, 9kg (very big baby) up to now he has slept on his tummy and been happy with it.

Accidental parenting was happening when he woke in the night and I gave him milk but he only was taking 2 oz at 3 and then at 5ish. Then would not want any milk in the morning.

After I figured out that he was not hungry at night approx 3 days ago, I looked at what else he was doing that was keeping him up. I saw he was rolling onto his back, a position he associates with play.

So, i need advice on how I can get him used to sleeping on his back if he rolls over onto it?!!

Is it a case of just letting him cry or is there something else I can do?

pls help us all out?

thanks x

Hi there, it's hard - hugs.  We had this issue for a while too.  We moved Finn to tummy around 12 weeks because of his reflux and he slept better.  But then he learned to roll and ended up on his back again and not quite happy about it.  We had to use shush/pat a few times at night and we also put him on his back to go to sleep again at the start of the night, he was tired enough to fall asleep that way.  He eventually learned to roll the other way, but started rolling a just a bit and ended on his side which he would then side sleep for a while.  Now he sleeps all over the place and every which way.  It's just developmental and something that you have to ride out :-(  I know some people have wedged their LO with towels etc. to prevent the rolling but I think it's easier to just let them get on with it and eventually they just learn to sleep different ways.  At 5 months he will be continuing great strides in mobility so it shouldn't last too long.

The tweaking never stops!

I agree with the above, every now and then my lo discovers that he can do something new and it will affect his sleep.  Just be patient, and roll him back on his tummy- he'll get the message eventually!  Good luck!
