2 to 1 transition, help needed
« on: November 10, 2009, 11:39:50 am »
Hi ladies, I havent been on here for ages as things have been ticking over nicely but since my ds turned 1 I have been struggling with naps again.

He was 1 at the beginning of Oct and was having an hour in the morning and a short half hour nap in the pm.  This was working well until he decided he no longer wanted the catnap last week.  We had a couple of days where he was waking at around 6am, settling for his nap at 11am (I followed his tired cues) and sleeping for nearly 2 hours, he was then happy to be up until bedtime (7 - 7.30pm).  However in the last couple of days he was been waking later (6.45 to 7am) which is great but he has only had a short morning sleep from around 11.30am and is therefore cranky by late afternoon but refusing another nap.   Yesterday I resorted to getting him to sleep in the pushchair which I haven't done for months so I feel like we have taken a step backwards.

Any suggestions on how I can get him to have a longer first sleep and therefore not need the second one please?

Since he was doing 5 hrs to his nap at the 6am wake up....could you try pushing his nap to 11:45/12:00 (5 hrs.) and see if that extends it. If that doesn't help...then perhaps he is OT and actually needs the time shortened. Is he waking rested and happy from his nap or cranky? That is sometimes an indication of UT or OT. If cranky...try going back to 11:00 nap no matter what time he wakes...if he's happy try pushing to 11:45/12. It's likely continual short naps have gotten him into an OT loop. He might regulate again with some shorter A's and trying to squeeze in a CN if the am nap is earlier.
