single/double sided feeding ??
« on: November 10, 2009, 16:27:08 pm »
dd is 3 weeks and goes back and forth between single and double sided feeding.  should i be doing more to encourage single sided feeding?

basically i offer the second side and if she takes it i let her go for it and she usually has a good feed on both sides (20 mins each side).  I can usually get a small amount of milk from the 'emptied breast' should i just keep offering the same side for the whole feed?  should i be starting to focus on establishing single sided feeds??

am i worrying too much about this as she is only 3 weeks?

I did single side feeding from the beginning, so I'm not sure when a good time is to do it exclusively.  Have you tried feeding on one side only for a couple feeds to see how your LO does?  Of course if she's hungry feed her, but you could give it a shot.  Your supply should be good if you go from double to single.

I am also a single side feeder, but I always offer the second side at every feed.  Ds refuses most of the time, but I always offer to ensure that he's taken a full feed.  Some babies just seem to naturally gravitate to single feeds, while others prefer double feeds.  I wouldn't worry about it at this young age.  Your milk supply is still being established, and your dd is going through growth spurts like crazy!  Just keep doing what you're doing, sounds like it's going well! :)
