What is this?
« on: November 12, 2009, 18:01:42 pm »
Hi ladies,

Just when I though my problem with my lo were mainly figuring our his A times, come screw up E times..!!.. :'(

My lo is 5 months old today , born 7.5 lbs & now is 17.6 lbs & exclusively BF. He was eating every four hrs with v.rare NWs for food. Because of his weight gain & my sensing that he was getting hungrier, couldn't really make it to the 4 hr mark, so my pedi suggested we start solid , which we did & now he has 1 meal of fruits, that's besides his feeds.

However, for the past two days he seems to be getting hungrier & hungrier...crazy , crying his head off hungry..!

This is what he's had so far:

BF : 08.30 AM
BF : 11.40 AM
Solids(1 pureed banana) : 01.05 PM
BF : 03.20 PM
Solids (1 pureed apple) : 06.20 PM
BF : 07.00 PM

We still have a top up feed ard 08.30 ~ 09.00 before bed & DF @ 11.30 PM

Is this a growth spurt or could he be teething & so hungry..!!

Do u think maybe I can give him herbs like camoumille when he's crazy hungry & it's not time for BF or solids?

Please help... :-X

(One last thought, yesterday after his morning feed I pumped, hadn't in a long while & decided to start, trying to stash for when I go back to work, so could this be by any means related??)

Hi there! I'm no expert, but I did ebf my twins for 17.5 months. I would have kept going if they wanted, but they had other plans :( Anyway, from my experience what you're are describing does sound like a growth spurt and or he is just needing more. If your LO is a hungry man- then go for it! Have you thought of giving him any cereal? I know that my B needed more food then my G, still does! I would say especially if you are starting to pump more- He may need a bit extra of something. Not sure if that really helps or not. If you don't want to do more solids, you could try do do more bfs too...

Just agreeing with pp, this behaviour does sound like a growth spurt to me too.  I wouldn't offer any herbs when he's acting hungry; although herbs are not regulated like medications are, they can have very powerful effects even on adults.  I would consider them like all other drugs and consult a doctor before offering them to your lo.  Especially with ebf babies, when they are demanding to feed more frequently you really should feed on their cues.  Milk production is a supply and demand process, and his increased demand is his way of making sure your supply keeps up to his needs!  If it is a growth spurt, things should go back to normal for you in a few days.

Here's some more information on growth spurts for you:

Thx ladies...will see how things go today & keep u updated..:)

A quick thought though..this AM he had a quick feed, abt 5 mins from both sides..!...he is always quick, but an hr later i thought I'd try to fed him & he had a 10 mins feed...mmm...do u think I should try & top him off after 1 hr of his feeds just in case or would I just be starting a bad habit?

Cheers,

I would think that topping off (for ever feed) may be a good fix during a growth spurt- But not a habit to get into... And to be honest, if your LO isn't in a growth spurt, I don't think there would be the need to feed! I know it has been a dew day, is he still a hungry bug or have things slowed down?

Do you offer one breast or both at feeds? Is he gaining weight well and meeting his developmental milestones? Plenty of wet and poopy disapers?

I'm heading out to work right shortly, but I wanted to drop off some hugs and I'll pop back on tonight and we'll see what we can do. Growth spurts can last up to a week, so nurse on cue, offer both breasts and if he wants more offer the first again.

Talk soon!

I am offering both & his diaper count is good..I am having cncerns that he isn't gaining much this month, so am waiting till the end of the month & if things r the same I will visit our pedi.

For his solids he normally has either cereal or fruits, so today I gave him cereal with half an apple..will see how that goes.

Thx alot for the support... :D

My LO's were not huge gainers at times either... but it all evened out over time. Don't worry :) I think you are doing fine! I know things seemed to get a little wonky for us when my LO's wanted more. It took a little bit to figure out the whole BF and solids balance, but we got through it!

One thing I would maybe try doing is changing the time of solids vs bfing. In the time you posted it looks like he is having his solid at 6:20 and bf at 7pm, when my dd started on solids I always offered the bf first and then the solid as soon as she finished the bfing. This way they are filling up during "one meal" instead of spread out snacking and they are bfing first so filling up on that- any extra room for food in their tummy after will be filled with the solid instead of the other way around (filling on solid, then topping up with bf). This way your supply will not be impacted as well. Just a thought to try in case it is not just a GS.
