Should you ever switch sides??
« on: November 19, 2009, 12:20:08 pm »
I know the advice is single-sided feeding due to fore and hind-milk but DS, during some feeds, seems to slow right down (despite the rousing, nappy-changes etc) and seem disinterested. I then take him off and put him down but he cries and still seems hungry. A couple of times I have offered him the second breast (when he's been on the first for 30-45 mins + ) and he seems to feed more enthusiastically again.

Has anyone else come across this? Is it ok to switch after a certain amount of time and if so how long? I know you then have to start the next feed on that side...

I almost always offer both sides at each feed, usually he will feed on one side for say, up to 20 minutes or so, then take some from the 2nd side but not drain. You do always have to start with that side the next time around. I don't really time the first, I let him decide when he's done, usually he will stop sucking so I just pop him off (he's not one to pop off on his own), I can also tell when that first side feels more empty when he's near done. With my dd I double side fed too and she bf until 18 months.

Marian's given you great advice - I would absolutely offer the second side.  There is no hard and fast rule about how long they need to bf on the first side before you switch to the second.  I would offer the first side until he is no longer interested, then offer the other breast for as long as he wants.  You could also try http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=88759.0 to keep him interested on the first side for longer, but still offer the second side once he is finished with the first.

FWIW, my ds is a single side feeder 90% of the time, but I always offer the second side at each feed.  He usually refuses, but once in a while he is still hungry and will accept.

Thank you so much for those replies  :) I tried it yesterday, giving him about 5 mins on the second breast. He suddenly came alive and gulped enthusiastically, seeming much more satisfied afterwards. This may have been because of the hormone you get in the foremilk? But it worked. Only prob was this morning his poos were a bit green and I've heard this is a big 'no'  ???

The milk that first flows out is a thinner consistency and flows faster, this is probably why he gulped enthusiastically and lots of the formilk could cause green poo. This is why it's important to let them feed long enough on the first side, so they get most of the hind milk. Green poo is not a bad thing, my ds had green poo for weeks in the beginning and I asked my Ped, he was gaining weight well and she told me not to really look at the colour of poo. Jack Newman's website will say the same about the poo- don't worry about the colour changes from time to time as long as they are thriving and gaining weight well.

As long as they aren't interested in the first boob anymore but still hungry, I would offer the 2nd. If you stop to burp, offer the 1st again, then if still not interested but hungry, move to 2nd. Try a paci first to make sure it's not just sucking they want to do. GL!
