confused - is he ready for 3.5 EASY?
« on: November 19, 2009, 22:43:04 pm »
Hi
my 11 week old has been taking less food on the 3 hour routine.  mid day bottle - instead of 120-130 ml he would take up to this week, suddenly he's taking only 70-80ml. He wakes up once a night but i am pretty sure it isn't hunger - usually i can settle him with a dummy or a cuddle. (but that's a different topic...). the only time he eats more is at around 7:00pm where he is taking up to 150 ml. (BTW - his weight is between  5.5. to 6.0 kilos - haven't checked for a week). he hasn't woken up of hunger for pretty much a few weeks now. he is taking shorter naps - habitually now he can't go past 35 - 45 minutes (working on that as well) however - he can't stay more than 1:10 minutes up. by that time he is so tired that stretching it even for another 5 minute causes a 20 minute nap - and overtired for the rest of the day (since settling him back to extent naps is virtually impossible).
so...? is it a transitional time and he would be ready to move to a longer routine in a couple of weeks or am i missing something?
Thanks

This often happens with bottle fed babies. He is not really for a 3.5 or 4hrly EASY until he is able to handle 1.5-2hrs A time as that is what is required.

This can make your feeds look rather messy for a while. At the back end of the 3hrly EASY it is quite normal for the feeds to alternate between bigger and little feeds ie 5oz/3oz/6oz/2oz etc. If your lo really isn't happy to stay on a 3hrly feed schedule you may have to switch to 4hrly feeds but stay on a 3hrly schedule for naps. This maks the routine messy for a while and becomes EASAEAS etc .

It is best to keep everything to the 3hrly routine if you can though, and move to the 4hrly routine when both the E and A time can handle it.
