6 week old LO night wakings driving me crazy!
« on: December 10, 2009, 15:50:32 pm »
My 6 week old Lo is on EASY although we haven't quite gotten the routing down pat. We're been working on the sleep training and it has gotten a lot better.  Usually, he goes down to sleep on his own at bedtime. The last 4 nights though, he's been waking up a lot at night and I'm getting annoyed from lack of sleep. He used to sleep well at night only to wake up for feedings every 3 hrs and I don't know what is wrong. Here was our day yesterday:
E 1:30am (after dreamfeed at 11pm)
went back to sleep
E  4:18am
Did not sleep till 7:40am
E 6:30am
S 7:40-8:30am
E 8:30am (wake up)

S 9-9:50am

E 10:50am

S 11:50am-1:45pm
E 1:48am
A
S 3:15-3:50pm
E 4:00pm
A
S 4:50-5:30pm
E 5:50pm
A
S 6:20-7:30pm
   8:00-8:30pm
A bath
E 8:50pm
S 9:30pm (bedtime)
dreamfeed 11:00pm
E 1:25am
E 3:10am
E 5:50am (did not seem to be feeding consistently)
Woke up at 6:45am put back to sleep
S 7:20-8am
E & Woke up 8am

S 9:45-10:10am
E 10:10am
S 10:40am

The wake up times at night are roughly around the same time. It doesn't seem bad at the first half of the night but towards the early morning, he wakes up a lot and doesn't go back to sleep on his own unless APed by dad (my efforts of sh/pat doesn't seem to work as fast and quietly). It seems like it may be due to a growth spurt but one of the feeds, he didn't seem that hungry so I am not sure. Could it be the APing? We've only APed the last few nights (since this started) because I'm so tired and dad doesn't have much patience to sh/pat. Anyone have any ideas?

At night, when he wakes up, keep at it with the shh/pat.  It only takes about 3 days for LOs to start picking up new habits, so be careful with the AP.  I know how tempting it is to use it, but maybe explaining to your hubby that there's a reason why your son is waking (which we're trying to figure out here), and shh/pat--while it may take a while--is the healthiest, most independent sleep promoting resettling tool you guys have in your arsenal ;)

How does that sound?

I'm just going to take care of it myself if he's not doing what I want him to do :) Last night was worse, he kept waking up almost every hour. DH took him to bed with us but he still kept waking up especially after we try to put him on the crib. I'm just going to tough it out, I guess. Wish me luck!

But if he goes down without AP during the daytime and goes down without crying much, shouldn't he be able to go down fairly easily and without AP at night as well? Shouldn't he know how to go back to sleep on his own?

In theory, yes...but he's probably so OT at night that he can't settle in.

But at his age, he's still organizing his night sleep, so that's where he needs the most direction on HOW to sleep right now.  This is developmental, and about the age of 3 months, they normally start working on naps (which is when most nap problems start appearing).
