What kind of sippy cup? UK post
« on: December 20, 2009, 21:05:49 pm »
Hi all this is probably mainly aimed at UK Mum's but just after advice which sippy cup you can recommend for my lo she's just over 6mths old and I have the following questions (after trying cold turkey she will not take a bottle so going to head straight for the sippy cup)

1) what kind of cups are best
2) how often do I offer the cup during the day
3) which feeds should I offer it as my routine looks like this:
7am breast
8am porridge
10am breast
1pm breast
4pm breast
5pm fruit/veg
7pm breast

4) she no longer wakes in the night if she does it's just for her dummy so no need for me to feed.

Thank you
x

We use the tommee tippee mug -- the one that comes in a set of 4 colours with a little fold down "spout".  I've tried other things since, but DS definitely likes that one best.

As for going from breast to cup, I would recommend trying this (based on our experience of easily transitioning from breast to bottle):

get DH to give the first feed (so she can't smell the BM on you)
Ask DH to strip to the waist (skin to skin contact)
Warm the spout on the bottle a little bit
Start with the second feed of the day so that she's not ravenous and you are not too stressed...

Lots and lots of (((((hugs))))

We use the tommee tippee ones too! They are really good as they are free flow so they don't have to bite down and suck like with the non-spill cups. It also means you can tip water/milk into their mouths at first so they get the idea about what is in there! They are also aout the cheapest there is and you can put them in the steriliser!

The other cup we use is a doidy cup with DD, their info suggests using it for BF babies instead of moving to bottles. DD loves drinking out of it but it is a bit messy and you have to have a firm grip or everyone has a shower ;D

Just thought of something else.
She has taken a bottle from DH before - of ebm, but I think it's the formula she doesn't like. Any advice here?
It's been much more of a struggle with DD as DS didn't really care where it came from lol!
We use aptamil (1), although I did change DS's milk from SMA to Cow&Gate. Decided that Aptamil is sposed to be gentler on bf babies??

My HV told me to use the tommee tippee one two. Apparently it's better to use a cup that doesn't have a 'non spill' spout as it prevents them from controlling the flow of fluid. Does that make sense??

Tommee Tippee fans here too! :D
Another great thing about these cups is that they are almost leak proof (we have had our 4 cups for 18mths and they go in the dishwasher daily and have never faded, cracked or lost their tight fitting lids) AND something which we discovered later, that unlike most sippy cups, the lid comes off and leaves a normal 2 handles cup without a silly screwtop. So when LO is learning to drink without a lid, you don't have to get new cups!! Part of DDs bedtime routine is her milk in the sippy with the lid, then right at the end she asks for the lid to be taken off to get the last drips of milk out!

The only disadvantage is that if you blow into the spout the liquid comes shooting back up out of it ;D It didn't take DS long to discover this and it took him AGES to get bored of it ;D
