one month old wakes up to eat and doesn't go back to sleep
« on: December 28, 2009, 03:20:24 am »
Hello, I have a one month old boy, whom I'm trying to get onto EASY.  It's been quite challenging, as everyday is different and his naps are really bad.  By night he usually wakes up between 12 pm and 1 am, then again at 3:30 am and finally at 5:30 am. I feed him at each time.  So I have 2 questions:
1- After the 3:30 am feed, he doesn't go back to sleep on his own, so what do you recommend to do instead of putting him back on the breast?
2- If he ate at 3:30 am, how come he wakes 2 hours later for the next feed, instead of 3, which is how he eats during the day (every 3 hours).

Hi there... I feel your frustration as I am currently going through the same thing. Last night was the first time my 5 week old DS slept 5 hrs straight. My doctor told me to feed him more often during the day so he knows his days from nights. At this point I think getting a 1 month old on any routine is not possible because they need to feed so often at this age and its no till the 6-8 week mark hathey actually have a true sense of their days/nights... so I've been told or found thru research. :) I'm crossing my finger for another 5hr+ stretch tonight!

After his 3:30 feed, you may want to try to settle him with pat/shush:  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=26672.0

Also, try to keep everything about the feed low-stimulation.  No lights, keep him swaddled if possible, etc, so that he's less likely to get wide awake and more likely to transitioned easily back to sleep.
