catnaps vs long afternoon nap
« on: December 30, 2009, 17:52:13 pm »
Hi there,

I am wondering if anyone can shed light on my 5 week old DS's weird nap behavior... In the morning he has a bunch of short naps and by short I mean as soon as I put him down he'll wake back up. If I choose to hold him he'll sleep much longer. When the afternoon rolls around he will go down for a nap by 2pm and sleep soundly for about 3hrs in his crib. I can't seem to get him down at the same time as my 3yr old DD as hard as I try around 1ish. If he happens to be asleep then and I put him down he'll wake up but if it is closer to the 2pm mark he is out cold... weird.

So in short:
- why are the naps in the morning only successful in my arms
- why is the nap in the afternoon successful in the crib
- why does 2pm seem to be the magic time for the pm nap

One last thing... how much time should I wait when he is sleeping in my arms to move him to his crib? It seems to be all over the map so I am wondering what is their sleep pattern at this age.

Thanks!

Hey, im sure whoever knows more than i do will ask for your EASY routine so you can post that, its easier to give advice then:-)

I am wondering if you are on EASY? Have you used shh/pat method?
The baby shouldnt be sleeping in your arms, you can calm him down in your arms with the shh/pat method but he should fall asleep in his crib. Once you re on a routine and sleep training most of this issues will go away:-) They did with my LO, we started EASY around his 4th week and sleep training around his 6th week.

Hi there cbell, the thing with falling asleep in your arms is that it becomes a prop and he will start to expect it to get to sleep all the time and this includes when he wakes up between sleep cycles, so the best time to start training him to fall asleep independantly is now :) the idea is that they go into the cot drowsy but awake and they fall asleep in the cot by themselves. if they cant yet then we do shh/pat.

If you can put up your routine in EASY format that will help us alot
eg
awake 7am
Eat 7am
Awake 7am till ...
Sleep ?am till ...
etc etc
