10 month old suddenly waking at night
« on: January 02, 2010, 18:52:37 pm »
Hi,

My 10 month old girtl has been STTN consistently since she was 5.5 months. We have just returned from Xmas holidays and her sleeping has gone haywire. The first night away she woke at 3am (I think she was too hot) and because she was in a portacot I brought her into bed with us and she finally went back to sleep. A couple of nights later she woke again and I did the same thing as we were on holiday with family. The other nights we were away she slept fine, although she has been waking early (6am).

Last night I thought great she is in her own bed, she will sleep fine but she woke at 2.30 crying and I had to bring her into bed as I am so sleep deprived at the moment (I tend not to go back to sleep once she has woken).

I think she has SA but going into her room to calm her down only makes things worse- when we try and leave the room she cries inconsolably.

I would like to try WI/WO but am not sure how to do it. Or does anyone have any other suggestions?

Her day looks like this
6am wake
6.30 solids
7.30 milk
9am sleep- between 45mins-2 hours
11.30 solids
1 milk
depending on how long she slept in the am she is ready for her afternoon nap around 3 hours after she woke and will sleep for an hour or so
5pm solids
6 milk
6.30 bath
7 bed

We have also been having issues with going to bed, sometimes it can take an hour- an hour and a half for her to go to sleep. We have only recently been dealing with this.

Thanks for the link. I don't think she is ready to drop to one nap yet as she is still only happy being awake for around 3 hours, otherwise all hell breaks loose.

Last night we had a 12 hour sleep, then 30 mins (on the way home) and then 2.5 hour naps. The day started at 6.30 (which I can cope with).

I guess my main query is how to best approach the night wakings- We have been trying the gradual withdrawl (well I have to stay with her until she falls asleep so am probably becoming a prop). This is so tiring as it can take 1.5 hours for her to go back to sleep, by which stage I bring her into bed with me.

What other methods do you think might suit? She gets worked up if I check on her and then try and leave the room if she is still awake and I am feeling very drained of energy come morning time.

Hi there, have you read the link here:

It really depends on your LO.  I think though that if you end up taking her into your bed, it's not really teaching independent sleep and she knows that if she resists long enough, she'll get into your bed in the end.  It's a prop.

It's normal for them to want you around at this age, and there will be a lot of resistance when she doesn't get what she wants.  I know it's tiring but it really shouldn't take too long before she gets the idea that your bed is not an option and that she has to sleep in her own crib at night.  Can you get some help with the training?

At the height of SA and because you are weaning a prop, I would tend to go with the GW method.
