Anyone doing 2 x 1.5 hour naps for a 9 month old?
« on: January 03, 2010, 18:28:41 pm »
BW suggests 2 x 1.5 hour naps at 9 months and we have been cutting the am nap to an hour and then doing 1.5 hour for PM nap.  We are STTN 7 pm - 7 am so I am wondering if I should let her go the reccommended amount but then it is hard to get the ideal A time in KWIM.  To BW mamas of 8-9 month olds how long do you let your LO's go for Am and PM naps?
TIA.

Hi there, we were when Finn was only doing 10 hours at night.  But he's now decided to do some 11 hour nights and refuse his PM nap.  We were on vacation for a bit and so his schedule was all over the map.  Also with the holidays, family gatherings etc.  Then he got a virus.  And now we are back to normal and all of a sudden he's refusing the afternoon nap.  Even today we shortened the AM nap to 1 hour and now he's currently, as I type, fighting his PM nap.  I knew it would be coming...I just didn't know when.  Seems in the midst of all the chaos he's had an increase in A time and doesn't need as much sleep.

Arrrgh.  Welcome to the 2-1!  Sounds like your LO is cooperating so in my mind, if it ain't broke do not fix it!  12 hours at night and 2.5 during the day is stellar for 9.5 mths old - I personally would go with it.

Thanks!  I should mention some days I tried 1.5 hours both naps and got a 10-15 earlier wakeup so I was like whooaa wait do I wanna do this.  Yesterday she did 1..5 x 2 and was down by 7:15 pm- 7:15 am so....I am trying the 1.5 x 2 again keeping fingers crossed.  My reason is that if I can get 12 hrish night and 3 hrs to myself during the day I'll take it! and thank you Lord!  Allforfin sorry to hear about your LO virus and hope he is feeling better.  Honestly holidays went smoothly but we did not venture far from home so it made it waay easier.  How did your LO do with the fam etc...?  We have a ski trip planned next week and one day we went to a relatives house and she slept in her packnplay in a guest room like a charm!!    Bryony I am right there with you =)  Thanks for your replies!

Hi there, yeah I think you need to follow her on this one because she will certainly let you know when it's too much sleep.  For sure take the longest you can get from her hehe.

Finn is fine now, just refusing his afternoon nap is all lol.  He did fabulous in the UK, STTN most nights and we really didn't have a routine per se, we let him sleep when tired, as much as he wanted and some days he had 3 naps and a very late bedtime and other days he had a normal nap day and bedtime.  He seemed to self-regulate quite well.  He was on maximum stimulation the entire trip so that seems to work well for him.  Things aren't as interesting and new at home so he sleeps like crap here hehe.

She will probably really surprise you with how well she will adapt when away.  They are funny little creatures aren't they? hehe

We do 2 naps, max 1.5 hours for both, sometimes a little less.  Here's the routine:
7:00 awake
10:00-11:15/11:30 nap
2:00-3:15-3:30 nap
6:45 bedtime.
I have an extremely active baby though - there is no possible way to delay the pm nap any further.

Just want to pop on here and reassure that a few minutes' sway in your LO's routine doesn't necessarily mean that something is "off."  Our wake-up times have about a 30 minute acceptable range (6:40-7:10, in case you're wondering).  Anything before 6:40 normally means we need some adjusting, and, well, he normally won't stay asleep after 7:10 anyways.  So, just my two cents, fwiw :-*

I have a 9 month old.  We do two naps that are at least 1.5 hours.  Usually morning nap is 2+.

7:30 wake
11:00-12:30: nap
4:00-5:30: nap
If morning nap is 1.5 or 2 hours, pm nap is closer to 3:30-5
8:00 bedtime

Sometimes when he takes a 2.5 hour morning nap, he a 1 hour pm nap.  I never wake from a nap.  I think if he needs to sleep, then he needs to sleep!  I have daycare kids and if the babies under 5 months sleep for 3 hours, I do wake them.  If the 2.5 hour naps messed with night sleep, I would reevluate, but nights are fine for us (8-7:30).

Thanks so much ladies for sharing your routines with me.  Also Tersaseda thanks so much for pointing that out.  So it is good to know a 30 minute window is acceptable.  Looks like this is where we are.

7 am wakeup
10:15 am - 11:45 am Nap

2:45 - 4:15 pm Nap

7:15 pm bedtime.

Allforfin I try not to get to comfy w/ our routine because YES just when you do that they switch it up on you =)  My reasoning for doing nap #1 a little earlier now and lettign her sleep 1.5 hour is because I was continuously wakeing her after one hour for nap number one so I really felt like she needed more sleep. But I understand that some mamas do not want to cut a sure thing with the AM nap and gamble with maybe having a shorter then desirable PM nap.  Once we move to the one nap daily this will be a PM nap so in theory I am trying to get her used to always taking a longer PM nap vs. AM nap IYKWIM

Hi there, yep I know what you mean :-)  I started a post the other day because I really have no idea what to do anymore.  I know he's not able to do 1 nap yet, and he is not giving me consistent naps anymore.  I am toying with doing a long AM/short PM because AM nap has always been the better one for us and I am hoping I can just slowly push his day out.  Since he's normally an early riser - between 5 - 6 - early bedtime doesn't normally equal earlier waketime for us.

I think no matter which one I chose, long AM/short PM or short AM/long PM it will be a long road...so might as well work with his natural tendencies (he likes a longer morning nap and hates being woken up and goes to bed early anyway).

Yes Allforfin perfect example of the nap gamble so I would def suggest letting him go as long as he will for AM.  I have even heard of mamas doing looong AM nap and almost like a PM catnap of 20-30 minutes.  I don't know if I would do that but whatever works for your LO I say go for it!  First and foremost BW says respect your LO so do what works best.  So last night she did 2 x 1.5 hour naps and sleep by 7:15 pm and I got a 6:15 am wakeup.  Honestly I have to be very careful to get her up promptly at the 1.5 hour mark yesterday I doddled and gave her like 5 extra minutes on each nap and with my LO it is enough to cause a slightly Earlier wakeup.  I am going to retake the baby personality test and see if we are still a textbook/angel baby...If anyone knows the link to the baby type quiz can you please post it? I am too lazy to search Lol.
TIA!
