What is his routine like - how spaced out are milk feeds/ solids? Is his first bottle before or after breakfast? If he is not interested in the first bottle and it's before breakfast what about dropping that one, making breakfast a little earlier and keeping the second bottle?  I think if he is happy then cold turkey is fine at his age and replace the second bottle with a snack like yoghurt if he needs it and that's the one you drop.

Hi Laura,

at the moment it goes like this

awake 7am
bottle 7.20/7.30am
breakfast 8.45
lunch (after nap) 1pm
bottle 2.30/3pm
dinner 5/5.30pm
bottle before bed 7.45

I didnt give him a second bottle today but offered him soy milk (MPI ugh!) all day and he drank maybe 2oz in total

today went like this:
7am wake
7.20 bottle
8.45 breakfast (two peices of toast)
12.30 snack of milk and biscuit
1.30 lunch
tried to offer fruit all afternoon but was not interested, he ate two biscuits eventually though
5.30pm dinner
7.40 bottle before bed

any thoughts on how i can change that for the better?

I need more coffee - I was thinking your second bottle was in the morning - sorry!! ::)

Would it fit with your routine to do breakfast a little earlier and lunch where you offered a morning snack? I would think he wasn't hungry after lunch at 1.30 which was why he wasn't interested in fruit in the afternoon. Would it work to do

7am Wake
7.20 bottle
8.15/30 breakfast

12/12.30 lunch (before nap)

Between wake up and dinner - milk/ snack

He may not need 2 snacks, my DS has never really needed snacks and if he did meals suffered so we only gave/give them if he asks.

How much milk is he taking? From around 1 year they really only need 12oz + solids.

well his morning nap is at 11-12.30 and he hates eating as soon as he wakes up so thats why lunch was a bit later. I guess im a bit worried about him being hungry between lunch and dinner, it seems a long gap without a bottle (one that he would usually polish off 9oz of)

what are the benefits of breakfast before bottle? would it make sense to just do that instead?

Definitly do breakfast before bottle if it suits him better. I think the reason for bottle first is if they are starving after the night it's a quick fill until breakfast but if he isn't hungry at wake up then it makes sense to do it the other way. DS was never hungry first thing and DD is pretty much the same, she will take 4 or 5oz but would certainly be happy if we left her for longer.
