Advice? Please look at our routine
« on: January 05, 2010, 04:54:02 am »
Our little girl is just over three months.  Here is our routine:

She wakes around 5 am and eats followed by a couple hours of activity.  She usually naps for 45 minutes or so.  Around 3 to 3.5 hours later, we start it all over again.  She does the same until after 6 pm she eats around then and we bath her around 8 pm.  She immediately falls asleep after her bath for an hour and she is up.  Ussually pretty upset.  I walk her around and hold her and then she is back asleep at 930.  She gets a formula dream feed at 1030 (always breatfed other than this DF).  She wakes around 230 or 300 and then again at 500 to start it all again.  In all feeding she takes about 3.5 to 4 oz. or 10 to 18 minutes on the breast.

The issue is, I am getting worn down with the 4 hours of sleep I get.  Sometimes she goes right back to sleep but most times she is awake numerous times throughout the night.  Her pacifier falls out or she breaks out of her swaddle.  She acts like she really dislikes the swaddle.

Anyhow, Ideas?  Is this just part of parenthood?  How long can it last?

I think she is really, really overtired she is awake for far too long. As a guide, at 5 months old you could aim for something like this
5am - feed and resettle back to sleep
7am wake and start the day
9am nap. If she wakes before 1.5hrs, try to resettle using shush-pat and/or PUPD
11am wake and feed
1pm nap as above
3pm wake and feed
5pm nap 30-45 mins
7pm asleep for the night

Try to make sure she is never awake more than 2 hours. After a short (45 mins) nap, you will need to cut that back even more to maybe 1.5hrs max. If you can't get her back to sleep at 5am, then I would have her asleep for the night by 6pm latest.

What do you think?

from one OT mom to another OT mom, anna's right - your lo does sound very OT. Split your days into 12 hours. One half of it is dedicated to her night sleep and the other one is for her daytime. Anything more than 12 hours, their little bodies get incredibly tired and will definitely leak into their night time.

Good luck..let us know how it works out :)
