What do you do when they won't nap but too tired for A time?
« on: January 05, 2010, 13:40:37 pm »
Hi,
This is my 2nd day of EASY. Yesterday was fantastic but today is a nightmare!
I'm doing everything the same and following his cues, but I cannot get him to nap today! He's had one 40min nap which was followed by shorter A time.
Now he keeps falling asleep for a couple of seconds then waking up. I don't know what to do now with his next A time as he is in a foul mood.
Also, when you have less A time because of short naps, is the next nap meant to be longer to get him to his next E?

Any help would be much appreciated!

How old is he? Are you using shush-pat to settle him, or another method?

Oh, forgot to say he's 14 weeks and using shush/pat, although he gets so hysterical I do PUPD when it gets out of hand.

The day has carried on like this - 3 naps each of 40mins, followed by tears, a minute or two of sleep and then more tears. As the day has gone on A time has become short more and more low key but he still wasn't interested in his last nap.

I'm just so exhausted from it today (and covered in little claw marks!)

Can you write out the routine you're aiming for - and what you're getting? Sorry for all the questions but it will help us to help you find a way through this.

Thanks for your reply,

I have him on a 3hr routine, and feel he really needs at least 2 sleep cycles in his naps (apart from the one before his bedtime). The day we had today and yesterday is here

I'm not meaning to duplicate posts, it's just yesterday and today I was discussing EASY in general, but today I'm having specific nap issues, and need help fast!

Thanks for anything you can suggest :)

from your most recent EASY it looks like he's awake only 1hr10mins before his first nap? I think he needs longer before his first nap maybe up to 1.5hrs (don't push too far too soon though). Then if he takes a short nap, keep the next A time to just 1hr. Does that help?

Thankyou, I'm certainly up for giving it a go, but I am following his sleep cues - should I just see if he can wait a bit longer?

Thanks for taking a look, Jac x

Like I say, don't push him all the way to 1.5hrs straight away. Try just adding 5-10 mins low key activity to his A time and see what happens.

Just wanted to clarify, I'm only saying add time to the first awake time of the day. If you still get a short nap, you'll need to cut the subsequent A time back. So no more than say 1hr awake after a short nap, or even less if he is giving you tired cues.
