waking during/after dreamfeed?
« on: January 05, 2010, 16:19:21 pm »
HI!
My son is 11 weeks old, and we have been doing his dreamfeeds now for about a week.  After he finishes his  bottle, he wakes up and begins to cry.  I do the shh-pat method and he goes back to sleep after 5-10 minutes.  Isnt he supposed to stay asleep during this process?  Am I doing something wrong?  The lights are out except for a small night-light, and I dont speak to him or rock him.  Suggestions?
Thanks!

Thanks so much for the help.  Trying to get him to sleep through the night.  he's days away from being 3mos old, and I think he should be getting past the every-three-hours thing.  Just dont know where to start.  :(

I actually bring Caleb downstairs for his DF, sometimes he stays asleep and sometimes he wakes.  I do it so he takes a good feed and so that if he needs to have some awake time during the 12-13 hours between bedtime and morning (not unreasonable!) then it's while I'm still awake.  He would be very wakeful in the early days but tends to sleep more these days.

Sorry about not posting that; read that sticky afterwards :)

Ian is 12 weeks and 5 days, and has been on a loose version of EASY since birth.  I followed easy when I had an in-home infant care, and I saw how it worked. (just cant get the hang of it with my own child! :) )  He had jaundice when he was born, so I had to wake him and feed him to get rid of it, but as soon as I got the go ahead to let him sleep, I did.  Anyhoo... loose version = we eat, we play, we sleep.  He's been on that routine since birth, but the times have been inconsistent.  That is what we are working on now.  As it stands, Ian's day is:

7:45 wake and feed
8:10-9:10 play time
9:15 nap (naps arent very long right now.  Having a hard time with the S.  I shush-pat until time for E
11:00 Eat
11:15 Activity
12:15 Nap
2:00 Eat
2:15 activity
3:15 nap
5:00 eat
5:20 activity
6:20 - 7pm cat nap
7:00 eat
7:30 bath, massage, book and wind down
8:30 usually asleep by now. (I know it's recommended for him to go down at 7, but his dad doesnt get home until 7:30, and he likes to help with the bath and play with his son a little)

at 10:30 I usually do the dream feed.  As I write this, he is getting better at staying down after that.  But now we have a new trick:  He is up off and on from 12:00midnight until 5ish am.  I shush-pat to get him back down, and I use a pacifier, but sometimes if it falls out it wakes him, sometimes he sleeps for 45 minutes and then is up again.  I know it's not ok, but I am so exhausted that I have been picking him up and napping with him until 7:45am.  I am so tired.  I think the frequent wakings are due to my milk supply.  Last week, we noticed that he was only getting an ounce or so when he breastfed, so he was getting up hungry every hour and a half.  We have now switched to formula at night, so I know he's full and he shouldnt be needing to get up like that.

PLEASE help.  I know this system works, but I must be doing something wrong
thanks
