Bedtimes gone off course.
« on: January 10, 2010, 21:59:25 pm »
Hi,

I have a 5 year old (Aidan) and a 20 month old (Evan) and bedtimes are a bit troublesome. They never used to be but gradually over the last few months Evan has resisted bedtime. Previously i would put him down and only needed to pop in once or twice at most. He started crying and shouting, we tried pd, and wi/wo but his screaning was terrible and wrongly (so as not to disturb older son) either myself or my husband would sit beside his cot till he went over to sleep. No eye contact etc but still not a great habit. Evan then started climbing out and it was becoming dangerous so we have had to put him in a bed. We still need to sit at the bottom of the bed which can take 20/30 mins till he goes over. He will immediately follow us out of the room if we leave. We've tried 'rapid return' but all the noise really disturbs Aidan and i know it will now take lots of time to get him back on track but can't afford for Aidan to lose that much sleep with the noise. He is also much more of a problem for DH which is not good if i am working my late shift or want a night out. His bedtime is 6.30am and he sleeps till 5.30/6. he has one (1.5hr) nap which he takes between 11 and 12.
What i want to know is what would be the gentlest exit out of the room to minimise noise? if there even is such a thing ;D

TIA
Em X

We went through this when we moved Stan to a big boy bed and the answer for us was putting a gate up at his door. But yes, there was crying. I honestly don't know if there's a way to do it with no crying, after all, Evan wants you there! How about moving away from the bed one step at a time until you are standing in the doorway? This didn't work for us but maybe it would for you?

What time does Aiden go to bed? I would be inclined to tell him that Evan has to learn to go to sleep by himself, there will be a lot of crying, but there will be a special prize for Aidan in the morning if he can stay in bed. Honestly, Evan will probably only cry for an hour or so, two at most, before he takes himself off to bed.
