Confused. EASY and Night feedings...
« on: January 16, 2010, 15:56:31 pm »
I was just reading the FAQ post on Night feedings, complete with links to the Kelly site that talks about how night feedings are a-ok and nothing to worry about.  Ditto nursing to sleep.
This seems to be in complete conflict with the entire EASY system, which I've been trying to implement this week.  I love nursing my baby to sleep - but the number of times she wakes at night was getting a bit much (every 1 1/2 hours, on average) - so I was sadly trying to stop the nursing to sleep, since it seems that the EASY plan and Baby Whisperer book (solves all your problems) is very hepped on having baby NOT nurse to sleep and working to get baby to sleep 7 to 7 without feeding.
Help!  Is this not a conflict?  Am I missing something?

The Kelly website used to have the BW book on its 'do not read' list or so I read in another site. There are many different 'methods' out there and you need to decide which one works for you. The point of the BW is to help babies learn to sleep independently and the theory behind the 'not nursing to sleep' is that the baby might only be able to fall asleep by nursing. How old is your LO? mine is 13 weeks and still has night feedings. It seems like 4-6 months is when you can expect that to resolve but it is different for every baby. The EASY plan is not a routine/set schedule but a guide to help you and your baby always know what to expect. I personally didn't expect my LO to STTN as a newborn, and there are a lot of stages of sleep that are purely developmental. I've been reading Healthy
sleep habits, happy child as a good guide for what to expect at each month for sleep. The BW is an excellent technique if you want to teach your child to sleep independently without using CIO.

This is just my two cents---and I am by no means an expert on BW!

I really like the book. He does talk about CC and CIO it out though, but he also mentions how important it is to have a routine. I use the book for what to expect, and don't plan on doing the CIO method. Basically he says that if you are having early wakings, you need to move the bed time up. Ideally a 4 or 5 month old should shoot for a bedtime no later than 7. Because you move the bedtime up, you might still have one night waking until 6 months and that is ok. If it is at the same time every night then it is considered a habitual waking and not due to hunger. You could try the W2S option or the shush/pat to get them to go down. He suggests to let them try and settle on their own---that's your call. He covers what to expect in terms of sleep throughout childhood and he's been spot on in terms of my LO. So for that I highly recommend it. It is not as organized of a read as I would like, but I've been able to find what I want in it.

He also says that the morning nap will develop around 9 or 10 AM by the end of the 4th month and that the afternoon nap will develop around 12 or 1 by the end of the 6th month. Try to get your LO on a schedule so that they are going down around this time to optimize sleep (of course looking for their cues). Months 0-3 are focused on developing night sleep and 4-6 are for naps. He says that some LO can STTN after 4 months but some take until 6 mo because of bedtime and metabolism. I think that is my LO...she's a hungry girl!

hope this helps...and I'll go back to the book to see if he says anything else but I would recommend getting it. I found a fairly inexpensive copy on amazon.

It's Marc Weissbluth. Again, it's a bit disorganized in sections, but I haven't had difficulty finding what I was looking for. Here is an amazon link:
