10 month old EW getting worse
« on: January 23, 2010, 08:08:32 am »
Hi there I have posted before about my 10 month olds EW, recently I have been shortening the morning nap to 30 mins in the hope it would eliminate the EW but it has in fact made it worse.  Also pushed the bedtime to 7pm instead of 6.30pm there hasn't been any OT as bedtime so not sure what I can do.

He is really miserable by 8am and screaming to go to bed so its hell trying to keep him up until 9am.

Please help x

Schedule at moment is

5am waking
6am breakfast
9am - 30 mins sleep
11am - lunch
1pm - 90 minute sleep
5pm - dinner
7pm - sleep

Hi there, yes he's OT I think.  I think you need to reduce the AM A time before that 30 min nap so he's well rested.  Basically a 4 hour A time and then a short nap will make him really tired throughout the day.

We do 3 - 3.5 hours A and then a 40 min nap.  After trial and error I found that 30 mins was too short for Finn and he wakes happier at 40 mins.  His PM nap is then longer, up to 2 hours.  It's all trial and error at this 10 month stage.
After a 30 min nap Finn can only do 2 hr 45 A at a push.  So that middle A reduces a lot when they are only fueled by a 30 min nap.

The reason we cut so quickly was because we had nap refusal.  Were you getting nap refusal?

Have you tried resettling at 5?  Is he waking happy or upset?

Thank you for your reply.

I can't really make the morning A time any shorter cos I have to take my eldest to school although I obviously could make the afternoon A time shorter.

He is usually just chatting at 5am so I leave him until it escalates into a cry, he will not go back to sleep if I go in and resettle he will scream straight away cos he has seen me!

We haven't had nap refusal but he will only nap for 90 mins at the most these days.

Bit of an update on this.

This morning lo woke at 5.10 so I thought I would try and resettle him something I have never done before cos its so near to 6am, it took 30 mins but he went back to sleep and slept until 7.50am I am sooooo happy!  Even though I didn't go back to sleep I think that he is OT during the day because of this early morning wake up.

Therefore I am gonna keep doing this and treat the 5am EW as a NW and try and resettle as best I can until 7am.

HI there, there is absolutely no harm in trying to resettle at 5 - looks like it worked well :-)  At 10 hours sometimes they are too rested to go back down but if he managed it I suspect he was still tired.

I would absolutely treat anything between 5 - 6 as a NW.  I would recommend to wake him at your desired wake time though or he might try to use that extra sleep as a nap.
