16 MTH OLD STARTED WAKING MULTIPLE TIMES IN NIGHT
« on: January 29, 2010, 11:27:05 am »
Hello,
My lo recently has had a cold, he started waking at night more. He is now better but he is still waking up every 2hrs in the night.
I just need some advice as I am not sure why or how to stop him from waking. I go in tell to him to go to sleep and he does but he is still waking instead of sleeping like he used to. Any ideas would be appreciated.  ???

How long since he recovered from the cold?

My DS did this after his cold as well. Similar situation really - was easy enough to settle but still waking.

After a week he seems to be sleeping better again. I think it just triggered off some comfort/ security issues after he fekt so poorly in his cot.

As long as you aren't APing too much it should settle.

Are naps OK though as the other possibility is some residual OT.

Hi,

He has the cold for about a week and is still a bit snooty but over the worst of it.
His naps are fine although he only has one in the morning usually about 2hrs. He used to sleep in the afternoon but he has grown out of that.

What time is that nap then? And when did he drop the pm one?

If it is in the morning he might be OT at bedtime as well - we usually try and balance the nap in the middle of the day once they drop one.

When they are ill they lose sleep but also need more sleep - so I bet a combination of illness and OT are causing the NWings

He goes to sleep between 9.30 -10 am and usually sleeps 2hrs.

He started refusing to sleep in December so the afternoon nap ceased, although if he is looking tired I will still try. The problem is I have other children one at pre school 9.15 am - 12.15pm and another who needs to be taken to school and picked up at 3.15pm. So I find it difficult having a system that fits around my other children.

That could definately be the cause of your NWs though as it will be giving you 6-7hrs of A before bedtime which is VERY long.

Difficult to know what to suggest to get round it though until he is old enough to take a 12.30pm nap instead.

Have you ever tried a short am nap so you can get a pm nap in?

Hello again,

Yes I have tried giving him a short am nap but he will not sleep in the afternoon no matter what.
I suppose he gets into a cycle that he is tired from waking every couple of hours in the night so he is really tired the following morning. Therefore preferring sleep in the morning. I agree it is long time from napping to going to bed but he wont sleep in the afternoon. It also doesn't help that I have to school runs.
I will keep trying but I am not hopefull  ::)

If he is refusing a 2nd nap, could you just push until 12:30 when you can actually get him down and then do a short A to bed?   I agree with Liz that with such a long A to bed, it can really mess up the night. My friend is in a similar situation with school drop off/ pick up and since her LO refuses a 2nd nap, she just goes with the afternoon nap and the shorter afternoon A.  Although, sometimes her LO falls asleep for 10/15 minutes in the car in the morning and then still goes down for the 2nd nap fine.  So the car ride actually AP's her LO into a morning nap.  Could that work for you?

Sometimes there is little you can do  :(. I mean you know the solution but practicalities get in the way.

((hugs)) and hope your LO settles back into things soon.
