Night feed getting earlier and earlier
« on: February 02, 2010, 08:44:39 am »
After my long post on getting back on track post hospital op for LO - one thing that has been quite constant is nights.
Pre - hosp we were
9:30pm last feed
12:30- 1am DFeed - only time oh can do
6-7am - night feed
9am start day

In hospital he was settled down for the night by 9pm - I couldn't stay as had to be at home with other two. Then he would do a 6-7 hour stint - ie no DF then a 4 hour stint so:
8:30PM last feed
3am - Feed
7:30am Feed

Now he has been home we have moved bedtime to last feed at 8;30PM
and DF and then night feed:
8:30 Last feed
12:30 Dfeed
6-7 am NIGHT feed typically

Except the last week the night feed has moved back in half hour increments to 4am!!!

It's his biggest feed of the day at 5oz. (he is 10lbs). A typcial feed is 3.5oz and the DFeed 2.5oz at most

That is other thing since op he's been totally on th ebottle whereras he only had 2 bottles per day before then. You would think he would sleep better now on formula.

I suspect I need to get more into him the day?

I think your DF is too late, Tracy recommends that it's no later than 11pm as it can disturb sleep rather than help it. I'm not sure that 6/7am is really a nightfeed - that's when most babies seem to be up for the day. Would it be worth shifting bedtime to give you a 12 hour 7am - 7pm day or does 9am - 9pm suit your family better? He is going 5.5+ hours from your DF - that really isn't bad for his age and size!

At the moment I can't do the last feed before 8;30 which is why we do 9 to 9. I agree 7 would be a wake up - but the last few days it has gotten earlier to being 4am.

Last night - he was up at 3:50am. Not sure how hungry he is though - I settled hime down then and at 4:10 and he got through to 5:15am.
The trouble is if I don't get in fast enough it becomes full blown screaming and he won't settle back down without a full tummy. Whilst he will sleep independantly he likes a full tummy too

What about not doing the DF and waiting for him to wake when he is hungry? Is his EASY going ok in the day - ie is he OT or UT causing the waking? If it is ok I would try no DF for a few nights in case this is what is disturbing his sleep.

What do you think?

Sounds like a good plan - except he has started to wake for the DF! I don't know why. I suppose we could try to settle him down and see what happens.
