10 Month old Spitting out food
« on: February 04, 2010, 16:32:56 pm »
DS went through complete spoon refusal, did good with finger foods exclusively for a few days and then figured out he can spit it all out, and is not eating much solids. He is BFing 4x per day and once in the middle of the night (teething/ another issue!) He puts most anything in his mouth and about 75% of the time chews it up, rarely swallows anymore. Spits out almost all the food, sometimes the moment it goes in, it comes out, especially if I pop it in his mouth!

Anyone else go through this??

Could it be too much breast milk??

What is his feeding routine, how close is he having his solids to his bf's? Also, how old is he and how long has he been on solids for?

We have him in a feeding seat, and I give him a few morsels at a time of one thing, when he finishes, I give him a couple of something else. For example chunks of banana and avacado and chunks of bread. If there is too much on his tray or another option, he will spit out whats in his mouth to pop something else in.

I have been trying to space BFs

7am - BF
8:30 - solids
11:30 - BF
1pm - solids
3pm - BF
5:30 - solids
7 - BF

He has been on solids since 5 months, quickly tired of purees, when to stage 3, tired of baby food, switched to mashed, refused the spoon, now only wants to feed himself (i sneak a few spoonfuls in here and there) but he is spitting out everything, like he is bored and not hungry. He has now begun complainging during mealtime to get out of his seat. Hes 10 months now.

So he sounds like he wants to try different things on his tray if he's spitting out some foods to pop in others. He sounds like he has done quite well with solids if he's gone through the purees, stage 3 baby foods, etc., so I can't help but wonder if simple single foods like banana, avocado, pieces of bread are too boring for him? Have you tried foods of other textures like broccoli slightly steamed but firm, cooked pasta, cooked rice with peas and carrots in it, foods that are closer to foods that we eat (minus the salt and bad stuff), using some dips, etc? I would try to experiment with slightly more complex foods but still age appropriate and non-choking.
