Early NW and EW's back
« on: February 07, 2010, 11:48:20 am »
The NW's shortly after bed and EW's are back...and I'm going to go crazy!  I am not sure if it's OT, UT, discomfort, or what!  H is getting 17 months and has been working on his first molar for MONTHS now.  Some of the front part of his molar has cut, and I can feel a teeny tiny sharp piece in the back that is working its way.  We've had some good nights and some short nights.  This is what his days have looked like lately:

2/3 NW cried out 1:15 unsettled and kept crying out until in at 2 with meds. Rocked asleep 2:20, restless jolting awake.off and on screaming until 3, asleep 3:15. Had to wake 7:30
Nap 1 10:40-10:55
Nap 2 1:50-3:25
Bedtime down at 7:30 and then cried out unsettled, had to stay until asleep 7:35/40ish

2/4 woke at 2, gave motrin and rocked. Asleep 2:30. Had to wake at 7:35
Nap 1 11:00-11:20
Nap 2 2:15-3:50(woke)
Bedtime 7:50
Screaming at 10:05 but calmed self
Cried out 11:30 but settled

2/5 awake after 6:40
Nap 1 10:30-10:50
Nap 2 2:05-3:45 woke
Bedtime 7:45/50
Woke and cried out 9:10

2/6 woke and cried out 5:50, meds and rocked at 6:15, back to sleep 7 until 7:30
Nap 1 10:40-55
Nap 2 145-3:20 (woke crying)
Bedtime 7:25/30
Woke 8:20 crying, wouldn’t settle self. In at 8:30 with Benadryl, asleep 8:50

2/7 awake by 5:45

I have tried one nap before but as of lately with him getting his molar he doesn't sleep longer than 2 hrs and then was up every hour at night. I was exhausted and I can't do that again. I had been doing 4.25 to bed but we were getting more NW's so when I cut back to 4 hrs things got better for a while.

Please, someone tell me this will stop!  First trimester exhaustion and no sleep is KILLING ME!!

thanks :)

Not sure if I figured it out or not but had H only do 3 hrs 50/55 min before bed, even after a 1.75 hr nap, and we didn't have any early NW's or EW's. He did wake at 1:40 but a dose of Motrin and he was back to sleep in 30 mins.  Not sure if it was the shorter A, longer PM nap, or the fact that the am nap was way later from the wake up time.  I'm sure this is all teething related so just trying to make it through and deal with any AP later!

haha, I said that then I had a hard time getting him down for his am nap :P  I think this may just be a lot of trial and error, survival mode, and getting through teething while doing the dreaded 2-1!!!  I'm sure I'll be back!!

I'm really starting to second guess myself  :-\ Second day that H has started to fall asleep while reading books but then the minute his head hits the crib he's awake and rolls around.  Last night he slept from 7:55-3:20 and then woke for Motrin, went back to sleep in 30 minutes, and then woke up at 7:05...so really 10.5 hrs.  He was falling asleep while reading books at 10:30 but then when I put him down he wouldn't sleep...had to go in and help him at 10:45.  So, do I need to bring his nap forward or push it later???

I'm starting to wonder if maybe he can try one nap again...but then I think about all the bad nights we've had when we did try (hrly night wakings, 3 hr long NW's....) I am getting confused because his last A seems to have dropped. I'm waking him after 1.75 hr nap and then he's in bed asleep around 4/4.25 AT MOST.  So how would that work with one nap?

This molar is just throwing me for a loop!  Sometimes he seems completely fine, other times shattered.

Any suggestions??

If he's falling asleep while reading his books I would try bringing the nap forward and sticking with the 2 naps.  Worth a try and see what happens.  If it doesn't work then you haven't lost anything really!  If you go the other way then you risk a lot of OT and issues with the 2nd nap etc.

Would he make it till 1 for his lunchtime nap?  If so, then you could hope for a long (2h+) nap and then have 4h till bed at 7/7.30 - would that work at all?  That's kind of what we are doing with E although our day runs pretty much an hour earlier than yours.  We are throwing in the odd 2-nap-day to try to keep the worst of the OT at bay, so you could maybe try 2 1-nap days followed by a 2-nap day.

I highly doubt he'd last til 1...on the last few times he's done one nap he was mighty tired by 11;30  :-\  One time I did manage to get him to 11:45 but he only  napped 2 hrs. So not sure if that meant he could do more...or not.

What would happen with a 10 minute nap at 11.30?  I sometimes find with E that it doesn't change the time she goes down for her lunchtime nap but does keep the OT at bay.

We're doing 15 sometimes 20....but I've just resorted to pushing it back to 10:45. It's not a huge deal..I just don't know why all of the sudden he's not settling at 10:30.  I know it isn't that big of a deal but he's tired when I lay him down but then gets all goofy! And with the 15 mins his pm nap is still the same, 1;45/2.

nothing like a sleepless night after a long day of work.  H has woken TWICE!! Supposedly this is what his day looked like from DH
Woke by 6:45
nap 1 10:15-10:45 (woke)
nap 2 2:15-3:45 (woke)
bedtime 7:40

he woke just before 1am. he had Motrin and Tylenol before bed. he was crying off and on, Nothing serious but just not settling. FInally about 1:10 I just went in, gave  MOtrin and he went right back to sleep as I was holding him waiting for it to kick in. he was back in the crib by 1:30. Now it's 4:45 and he's awake again! he keeps crying off and on and the cries are getting screechier..if that makes sense :P  Shouldn't need any pain meds since he had Motrin at 1. What else is it??  Is it honestly  teeth? he's got the one molar that has cut and has 2 sides of it working down (still a long way to go) and the next two are just now pushing up on the gum and look so close to cutting soon.

This is what happened at the cabin this weekend, the waking twice. I assumed it was from being in an unfamiliar place and having crappy naps. he had a great night the night before and he napped 45 min in the am and 1.75 for the pm but I figured that was because of the crappy night before having an almost 2 hr NW.

Any ideas???

Hate to say it, but I think it might be time to go to one nap - he's managed it a couple of times and I think they often outgrow 2 naps before they are ready for 1.  I know that we had this problem with E for a few weeks - a real PITA.  We did end up having to do catch-up days every now and then, but things have been generally easier since we went on to 1 nap.

Have you thought about taking him to a cranial osteopath?  They can sometimes help with sleep problems - we took E last week and although he didn't find much to do, he did relieve some congestion across her forehead, and she has slept so much better the last few nights.  There is a post about it on the health board from someone else who went for it and is convinced it solved all her problems.

Our insurance doesn't cover drs like that :(  And there is no way I can afford it.

I went ahead and tried the one nap since both NW were short and I woke him at 7. He started to get a tad fussy around 11:30 but was ok once I gave him lunch. Seemed ok, went down without a problem at 11:55. Started coughing at 1hr20 min and woke crying at 1.5hrs  :'( :'( :'( I tried to rock with him and he tried and tried to go back to sleep but just couldn't.  I'm in for a LONG night...or maybe I should say a short night!
