Cat napping and not self settling during the day
« on: February 08, 2010, 16:11:20 pm »
Hi,

I have a 4.5mo ds who will self settle really well at night (started doing this a few weeks ago with no real training from us).  But will not self settle during the day.  And will only nap for 30 minutes.

I can't decide if the 30 minute napping is just the way he is.  Or if its something I need to 'fix'.  Cos no matter where he naps, he wakes up at 30 minutes every time.  Even in the car or baby bjorn.   So the theory about them waking and looking for the same situation under which they fell asleep does not ring true with this.  Cos in both these situations he should be rocked back to sleep.  Plus he always wakes up happy.  Although he can only last another 1.5 hrs before getting tired again.  Which is a bit annoying.

I would however like him to self settle during the day in his cot.  But whenever I try this - with shush pat for instance.  He just looks at  me as if to say 'what am I doing in my cot during the day?'  and crying slowly escalates.  I usually end up breastfeeding or rocking him to sleep.

Has anyone used pupd for a cat napper?  Or to teach self settling to a baby who will self settle at night but not during the day?  I am wary about doing this, as if it ends up with a lot of crying then he might start associating the cot with crying.  And then no longer settle at night.  The last thing I would want is to creat problems at nighttime.  And still not have fixed the daytime naps.  I guess I am hoping he eventually gets the message and starts self settling during the day when he is a little older.  But perhaps this is wishful thinking.  And in actual fact I should just get on with sleep training now?  Is 4.5mo a little too young for pupd?

Sorry for my rambling on....

Hi there, are you able to put up your routine? even just how the last day went? this will be very helpful to see.

also you say you dont want it to affect his nightsleep but it will eventually, he will become so overtired that he will start waking through the night so we best try and sort this out soonish :)

Hi,

I think you will despair at my routine - or lack of it.  There are so many factors that would need to be fixed.

I try to roughly follow easy.  But it ends up more of a 2 hour easy.  Cos he only sleeps 30 mins.  Then can only last 1.5hrs before getting tired again.  I have had a lot of problems with low milk supply.  And have found more frequent feeding helped keep milk supply up.  Which is why I feed him every time he wakes.  And end up feeding every 2 hours.  He also gets 2 top up feeds of formula towards the end of the day.  As my milk supply is low then.

Anyway,  This is what yesterday was:

7.00 Awake  Breastfeed in bed  He fell asleep and we both dozed in bed til 9am
9am - 9.20  Breastfeed
9.20 - 10.00 Activity
10.00 - 10.30 Wind down
10.30 Nursed to sleep (30 minutes)
11.00  Breastfeed
11.20  Activity
12.45 out for walk with baby bjorn.  Slept for 30 minutes
1.30  Breastfeed
1.50 Activity
2.30 out for walk again slept for 30 minutes
3.15  Bottle Formula
3.30 Activity
5.00  Rocked him to sleep but he woke after 15 minutes
5.30 Activity
6.30 Rocked him to sleep but again he woke after 15 minutes
7.00 Start bedtime routine - lots of relaxing time etc..Breast feed followed by bottle feed.
8.00 Sing nursery rhymes on our bed then put him into cot.
8.20 he fell asleep by 8.20.
1.00 Breast feed
4.30 Breast feed
7.00 Breast feed (during which he fell asleep and dozed til 8.00).

The first thing i thought I would try to tackle was getting him to fall asleep on his own during the day.

Am I just a lost cause for ever getting much of a routine together?
