NW 1 hour after going to bed
« on: February 10, 2010, 02:21:45 am »
I guess this is considered a NW, feel free to move if it is not.

My 3.5 mo old has been on EASY since birth and independently sleeping since 10 weeks. For the past 2 weeks she has started waking up almost an hour (to the tee) after going to bed for the night. She cries but not too heavily which lasts anywhere from 5-10 minutes. I used to go up there and try to shush/pat but this seemed to OS and instead have just let her cry---it has NEVER become a 'I need you cry' and if so I would intervene. However the fact that she wakes up crying at all bothers me and I'm hoping to get some help eliminating this. Sometimes (1-2/week) she will wake up again 2 hours from this and will truly cry. I go to her then, do not feed and settle to sleep. I notice that the later wakening occurs especially if she did not nap great during the day, but the 1 hour after bed waking occurs pretty much nightly. Here is our routine. She is exclusively BF. We went to a 4 hr EASY about a week ago.

Wake somewhere around 4-5 (feed) back to sleep.
Wake 7A
E/A 7-8:45
S: 8:45-10:30 (sometimes 11)
E/A: 11-12:50
S: 12:50-2:30
A: 2:30-3
E/A: 3-4:30
S: 4:30-5:15
E: 5:15
A: 5:30-6:30
E: 6:30
A: book until bed
S: 7:15
Awake 8:15 cries/fusses 5-10 minutes; sometimes wakes 10:15.

I have been doing a type of 'cluster feed starting at 5:30 since she does not do a DF. I have done this since birth as the DF was too OS. My baby is a textbook baby though.

Most often these early evening wakings are b/c of too much A time after the CN.  You might try shortening the book time before bed, even by 15min to start, and see if that helps.

My guy is 7mo and does 2h after the CN.  We were doing more like 1h30 when he was your DD's age.

What do you think?  ;)

Sophie always did this when she was OT at bedtime. It was bizarre, exactly one hour after going to sleep she would wake and cry, you could set your watch by her.
I would shorten her A time before bed, 2hrs is a lot at this age. I would try keeping all A times to no more than 1hr 45 min.
Check out this link, it has typical length of A time for each age

Ok I'll try tonight and see. She woke up with a cold this morning (her first) so I am not sure if that will throw us off. thanks for the advice. Last night she did the 1 hour one but not the 2 hour one. I also put her in the crib after she yawned but it took her about 10 minutes to fall asleep (on her own). I wasn't in the room and she didn't even let out a peep, just kind of looked around and then fell asleep. so I've been thinking this waking thing was because she was UT since she doesn't fall asleep immediately but she doesn't fuss either. I'll reduce the A time and hopefully it'll work! Thanks again!

Oooh, good luck with the cold.  Poor DD!  That can definitely throw you off, I hope it doesn't too much.  ::)

I think some LOs just need time on their own in the crib as they're falling asleep.  My DS talks to himself for 5-10m every time before he goes down, regardless of if he's OT or UT or just right!  I wouldn't use that as a marker, necessarily.

Let us know how you get on with the new As if she can do it with her cold!  ;)
